The Malaya Makerthon 2019 was held on the 11th and 12th of May 2019 at Kompleks Pengurusan Penyelidikan dan Inovasi, Universiti Malaya. The event was organized by Kolej Kediaman Raja Dr Nazrin Shah (KK12) from Universiti Malaya. There were 10 Universities from Malaysia and Singapore participated in this event. They were allocated 24 hours to work on given problem statements in order to solve specific obstacles in building a smart city.

A team from the School of Electrical Engineering, UTM has successfully managed to secure “The Championship Award in Malaya Makerthon 2019“, along with “The Most Hardworking Team Award” and “BOSCH Best Video Presentation Award“. This team, known as MAXffort, from UTM, consisted of 4 SKE students, namely Azwad Abid (L), Muhammad Razzi Bin Abu Amin, Mohammad Yusuf Been Hashem and Mohammad Abdullah Siddique. They were able to build a working prototype of “A Reverse Vending Machine for Recycling” and “An Automatic Waste Sorting System” within a span of 24 hours completely from scratch. Their product made an extremely positive impression on the fellow competitors, organizers, respective judges and the sponsors. The team was also selected to join this year’s famous competition “The Great Lab 2019” organized by Collaborative Research in Engineering, Science and Technology (CREST) and will receive a seed fund of RM1500. Furthermore, they are given special opportunities from Malaysian Global Innovation & Creativity Centre (MaGIC) to turn their ideas into reality.
