JOHOR BAHRU, 6 March — Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) through its expert researcher, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Sharifah Kamilah has been appointed as a partner university in ERASMUS + SHYFTE 4.0 Project.

The project aims to provide support to academic and administrative staff in Asian higher education institutions (HEIs) to design and implement new methodology and learning materials to enhance and improve the competences and skills related to the industry.

This will enable HEIs organisations to align their learning programme strategy with the requirements of the regional industry and the global labour market.

Other aims of the project are to build and strengthen links between HEIs and Industry 4.0 and to promote the job market by minimizing the skills gap and to build Skills 4.0 LABs or Learning Centres of Excellence in Asian Partner’s HEIs to enable them to become the reference centre in their respective countries and to disseminate the results of the project nationally and regionally.

Industry 4.0 aims to preserve and develop an innovative and job-creating industrial activity.

This is due to the constantly changing business environment which sees companies and industries facing difficulties in recruitment.

The advent of digitisation, virtual design and industrial Internet are among the drivers in the 4th Industrial Revolution (4IR) that revolutionize the industrial sector to become a global and interconnected system with more personalized products and industrialized services.

With the current changes, it is necessary for future and current recruits to adapt to these technological evolutions in order to fulfil the needs of the industry skills.

Therefore, defining the skills required and designing appropriate training for the development of relevant skills should be addressed accordingly.

To address this need, Erasmus+ has financially supported the SHYFTE 4.0, Building Skills through University and Enterprise Collaboration as part of the “Capacity Building in the Field of Higher Education” project.

The project which is coordinated by Université LUMIERE Lyon 2, France has been awarded €952,617.00 over a three-year project duration.

The HEIs partnership project is a collaboration between three European partners: France, Italy and Portugal and three Asian partners: China, Thailand as well as Malaysia with UTM and Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) as the Malaysian university partners.

UTM researchers involved in this project are Assoc. Prof. Dr. Sharifah Kamilah Syed Yusof as the Principal Investigator with Assoc. Prof. Dr. Naziha Ahmad Azli and Dr. Norjulia Mohamad Nordin as the project members. This research is also supported by the Centre for Artificial Intelligence & Robotics (CAIRO) as the associated partner.

The HEIs involved are from EU Program Countries which are ULL  – Université LUMIERE Lyon and COGNITUS – SME from France (Coordinator),   UNS – University of Sannio, Italy and UNINOVA Institute from Portugal.

The ASIA Partner Countries who are involved in the project are UTM and UPM from Malaysia, Chiang Mai University and Kasetsart University from Thailand as well as Chengdu University and Chengdu University of Information Technology from China.

The SHYFTE 4.0 project kick-off meeting was held last 21-25 January 2019 in Lyon, France with UTM represented by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Sharifah Kamilah.
