CEO Huawei Malaysia Gives Inspiring Talk at UTM under the CEO @ Faculty Programme

KUALA LUMPUR , 17 November 2015 – A public lecture by Mr Abraham Liu , CEO Huawei Malaysia was held at Dewan Utama, Menara Tun Razak, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia Kuala Lumpur Campus this morning. This programme comes under the CEO @ Faculty Programme (CEO@FP) mooted by the Ministry of Education, in support of the Second Shift of the Malaysia Education Blueprint 2015-2025 (Higher Education) which aims to enhance Talent Excellence.

The CEO@FP initiative aims at encouraging exceptional and notable CEOs from the industry to share their experiences and knowledge in steering an organisation to success. These CEOs will be on the Advisory Panels of selected universities, in addition to giving public lectures, keynote addresses, and inspirational talks. They will also be involved in co-teaching with a University Professor on a particular subject at selected host universities.

Mr. Abraham Liu Kang, CEO of Huawei Technologies Malaysia, one of the appointed CEOs under the CEO&FP will be investing a significant amount of time mentoring staff and students of universities across Malaysia in general, and Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) in particular, over the next two years.

During his tenure as an appointed CEO under the CEO@FP, he will be sharing knowledge and experiences pertaining to ICT education, leadership mentoring for the ICT sector, practical knowledge transfer. He is keen on developing local talents, enhancing knowledge transfer, and promoting a greater understanding of converged ICT technologies and digital economy. The willingness of visionary CEOs like Mr. Abraham Liu Kang to invest time and energy in institutions of higher learning augers well for the nation, as industry and academia collaboration can harness the best minds from both worlds, resulting in accelerated innovation.

Huawei has contributed significantly to the ICT human capital development in Malaysia. The company trains 20,000 engineers annually at its global training centre in Cyberjaya. Huawei has also facilitated the ICT training of more than 10,000 teachers and students and has built training labs in eight top Malaysian Universities jointly with Multimedia Development Corporation Sdn. Bhd. (MDeC).

In recent months, Huawei has also taken the initiative to train students to independently run a Huawei device store on campus in one of the public Universities in Malaysia. This is an effort by Huawei to develop students’ entrepreneurial mindsets – a first of its kind in the country. Huawei is also into nurturing global mindsets through several initiatives, one of which involved sponsoring study trips abroad for Malaysian students.

Synergistic collaboration between UTM and HUAWEI will assist Malaysia to meet the needs of professionals with specific skills, particularly in engineering and information technology. This effort is in line with the country’s desire to become a developed high income nation by 2020.

The CEO Faculty program is a programme coordinated by the Ministry of Education to strengthen various collaborations and technology transfer process between the university and the industry. Both parties will work together to train competent and skilled graduates in the ICT related field, giving graduates a head start when joining the workforce.

Mr. Liu, as the CEO of Huawei Malaysia, stressed that the alliance between the industry and academia is of utmost importance in establishing and maintaining the skills needed by ICT graduates to become global players. Huawei appreciates the continuous support from the Malaysian government in realizing its mutual vision with other stakeholders for ICT education in Malaysia. Huawei is willing to build strong partnerships with institutions of higher learning in Malaysia and will continue to pursue the process of knowledge transfer and any opportunities for cooperation in the future.

This initiative is part of the larger Malaysia Education Blueprint for the next decade as announced by the Ministry of Education. This blueprint aims to develop the education sector to meet the demands of the Industry in Malaysia that is continously growing.  UTM fully supports the various initiatives and programs planned under the CEO Faculty Programme. This programme is envisaged to further strengthen and facilitate various other joint ventures between the academia and the industry, particularly in the area of training and research activities. It will certainly enhance the level of knowledge and skills of all stakeholders involved, and will further elevate the position of Malaysian Universities in general, and UTM in particular, at the global arena.

The program was attended by Dato’ Low Keng Kok, En Redzuan Isa (Representative from the Malaysia Ministry of Education), Prof. Dr Ismail Abd Aziz (UTM Deputy Vice-Chancellor – Student Affairs and Alumni), Prof. Dr. Durrishah Idrus (Director of UTM KL Campus), UTM top management, and all levels of UTM staff and students, as well as distinguished guests from the industry and other higher institutions.
