“Meet The Biosciences Experts” at Sutera Good Earth Exhibition

The Department of Biosciences, Faculty of Science, UTM demonstrated a few series of workshops during the Sutera Good Earth Exhibition 2019 which was conducted at Sutera Mall in Taman Sutera Utama, Skudai from 13 until 29 September 2019; with the joint cooperation by the Majlis Bandaraya Iskandar Puteri (MBIP). The workshops conducted by the Bioscience Experts include:

2. “Kitchen Waste for Greener Earth” by Dr Alina Wagiran

GCRF Water Security and Sustainable Development Hub Assembly (Autumn) 2019

GCRF Water Security and Sustainable Development Hub Assembly (Autumn) 2019 was held last week from 23rd to 26th September 2019 at Hotel Jen Puteri Harbour, Nusajaya, Johor. This Hub Assembly was co-organized by Centre for Environmental Sustainability (IPASA), Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM), Newcastle University Medicine Malaysia and Newcastle University from United Kingdom. A total of 78 participants from United Kingdom, India, Ethiopia, Colombia and Malaysia had gathered at this annual Hub Assembly with the aim to finalise the Work Stream plans for the coming 12 months of the GCRF Water Security and Sustainable Development Hub (the Hub), with outline plans to the mid-term of the programme, and impacts around the Work Stream activities. Furthermore, the purpose of this Hub Assembly is to gain an understanding of the specific water security context in Malaysia and how the Hub can work together to address these issues. At the same time, through this Hub Assembly, not only partnerships across the Hub can be refreshed and re-energised, formation of new connections particularly among the Early Career Researchers (ECRs) and other stakeholders are facilitated as well.

UTM Won Gold and Silver medals for Viral Vlog Competition at HE-ELCA 2019

Higher Education English Language Carnival (HE-ELCA) was first organised in 2017 at Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM). This year, Universiti Sultan Zainal Abidin (Unisza) and Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT) jointly hosted the carnival at Kuala Terengganu.

HE-ELCA 2019, which focused on student-centred learning activities, saw the participation of 500 students from 20 public universities in Malaysia. The main purpose of the event is to motivate university students with Band 1, 2 and 3 MUET levels to be confident with the usage of English language.

Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) sent fifteen first year students to participate in HE-ELCA 2019. They were accompanied by ten senior students who acted as their trainers as well as four English instructors from Language Academy, Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities (FSSH). These students participated in various English language games and competitions such as Photojournalism, Viral Vlog and Western Dikir. For Western Dikir, (a rebranded name of the traditional performance – Dikir Barat) our team managed to enter the final round but unfortunately we did not win any medal. Meanwhile, for Viral VLOG competition, our teams successfully bagged both gold and silver medals.

The carnival received good feedback from all attendees. The participants enjoyed the fun learning sessions at HE-ELCA while the trainers, who are Teaching English as Second Language (TESL) students, picked up some helpful teaching tips for their future career. The commitments and achievements of the students at HE-ELCA have made UTM proud.

We are happy to announce that Language Academy, FSSH, UTM will be the host of HE-ELCA 2020. Let us welcome the delegates from other universities to our beautiful green campus and show them our southern hospitality.

Highlighting the psychological impact of smartphones on students at the 9th International Conference on Non-Ionizing Radiation (ICNIR 2019)

The organising committee approached Dr Narina to be one of the key speakers in this conference based on a publication of her research work with her PhD student. Even though the conference was highly technical conference which related to the field of pure science and engineering, yet Dr Narina was given a chance to share her research findings about relationship between stress, emotional regulation strategies and problematic smartphones among the Malaysian university students, as well as the mediating effect of smartphone use motive on these variables. Even though this is still an on-going research, Dr Narina was able to share some parts of the research findings with the audience. Dr Narina was the only none pure science key speaker in this conference.
