UTM as Plenary Speaker on Sustaining International Partnerships in Japan JAGCE’s National Convention

UTM Dean of Faculty of Engineering, Prof Dato’ Ir Dr Mohammed Rafiq Abdul Kadir presented as plenary speaker at the national convention of Japan Association for Global Competency Education (JAGCE) in Shibaura Institute of Technology (SIT), Minato City, Tokyo. Representing UTM Vice Chancellor, Prof Mohammed Rafiq highlighted the key role of the international office in sustaining international partnerships, and several best practices including active participation in international events for higher education, a system to record and monitor partnership activities, and close communication and cooperation with members of faculties. At present, UTM has more than 300 active global partners and is actively involved in 26 international alliances. At the convention, several strategic collaborations with top global universities such as the MIT-UTM Malaysia Sustainable Cities Program with Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Low Carbon Transport Research with Imperial College London were also highlighted.

UTM Strengthen Ties with Japan and South East Asia’s Industry-Academia-Government Consortium

As Advisory Members, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) and Malaysia-Japan International Institute of Technology (MJIIT) attended the Global Technology Initiative (GTI) Consortium Symposium on 6 December 2019 at Shibaura Institute of Technology (SIT), Japan. GTI is an industry-academia-government collaboration comprising of 218 member institutions including industry, corporations and associations, learning institutions, and government organisations in Japan and South East Asia. The symposium featured special speeches from its member representatives, including Mr Alexandre Riesterer, Director and Executive Vice President of Bosch Corporation, Japan, and Dr Hiroshi Fujiwara, Chairman and President, and Chief Executive Officer of the Internet Association Japan and BroadBand Tower, Inc, Japan.

UTM secured RM3.9 M of grant for an Asian-European consortium with UNIBO, the oldest university in Western Europe

Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) and University of Bologna (UNIBO) collaborated in an Asian-European consortium to improve the effectiveness of research and innovation management in Asian higher education institutions. Established in 1088, UNIBO is the oldest university in the western world. It is the top research university in Italy and is one of the leading academic institutions in Europe. It hosts a community of more than 85,000 students, making it among the largest in Italy. UNIBO and UTM has been in close collaboration since 2017 in an Erasmus+ project, named SPIRE, with UTM as lead coordinator and close to RM3.9 mill of grant awarded by the European Union.

Strengthening and Sustaining Partnerships: UTM Hosts Malaysia’s First International Staff Week 2019

Universiti Teknologi Malaysia hosted its first International Staff Week 2019 from 28 October 2019 to 3 November 2019 on its Johor Bahru campus to strengthen and sustain partnership to benefit participating institutions and its international alliance, the Asia Technological University Network (ATU-Net). The International Staff Week 2019 (ISW2019) is the first to be hosted by an international university in Malaysia, and it saw the registration of 37 participants from 19 institutions from 10 countries, with the furthest being from Czech Republic.

Supporting Universities in the Asian Region through ASEAN Learning Network

Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) supports universities in the Asian Region through ASEAN Learning Network. Recently, university leaders and representatives from eight international universities and two Malaysian universities convened in UTM for the network’s executive committee meeting, annual general meeting, and strategic and transformational workshops.
