PONTIAN, Aug 15 – In an effort to bridge the gap between academic learning, industrial immersion and grassroots community engagement, the Student Experience Unit of Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) International hosted a transformative event. Collaborating closely with Azhar Food Manufacturing Sdn. Bhd., the organizers successfully executed the Eksplorasi Industri Kerang (Cockle Industry Exploration) and University Social Responsibility (USR) programme. Set against the coastal part of Kampung Tampok Laut in Pontian, Johor, the initiative served as a platform for cross-cultural networking.
The impactful event brought together a dynamic, multicultural delegation of 32 enthusiastic participants. This diverse cohort featured 15 international students studying at UTM, 12 local Malaysian UTM students, and a special group of five visiting students from Universitas Sriwijaya (UNSRI) in Palembang, Indonesia. By uniting young minds from various backgrounds, the journey was uniquely designed to merge experiential learning with meaningful corporate-social synergy, fostering mutual understanding and global camaraderie among the youth.

The day’s itinerary kicked off with the highly anticipated Eksplorasi Industri Kerang. During this segment, students stepped out of their comfort zones and were directly exposed to the intricate, labor-intensive processes of local cockle catching and processing.
Participants gained valuable, firsthand insights into the coastal economy, learning exactly how local seafood is harvested, carefully handled and prepared before being distributed to regional markets.
Following this educational tour, the students were treated to an authentic local culinary experience. They gathered to savor the freshly caught and expertly cooked cockles, served alongside a delightful selection of traditional Malaysian kuih-muih, allowing international visitors to fully appreciate the rich food heritage of Johor.

Demonstrating a profound commitment to societal well-being and environmental stewardship, the student cohort then transitioned into a hands-on USR initiative. They conducted a traditional gotong-royong (communal cleanup) at Taman Rekreasi Kampung Tampok Laut. These dedicated cleanup efforts helped restore and preserve the natural beauty of the local recreational space for village residents.
Following their hard work, participants enjoyed a hearty networking lunch generously sponsored by Azhar Food Manufacturing. This shared meal fostered closer ties among the corporate partners, the hospitable local villagers and the multinational student body.

Beyond immediate community service, the program strongly aligned with several United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). It actively promoted Decent Work and Economic Growth (SDG 8), Responsible Consumption and Production (SDG 12), Life Below Water (SDG 14) and Partnerships for the Goals (SDG 17).
Crucially, the event served as a proactive step for the Internationalization at Home (I@H) initiative. By blending local community stewardship with international student collaboration, UTM International continues to pioneer dynamic, globally minded learning environments that enrich students far beyond conventional classroom boundaries.
