TAWAU, Sept 8 – The SMARTCOM program, a partnership program by Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) with Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS), is set to make a significant impact in Tawau, Sabah. Taking place from 3rd to 8th September 2025, this program not only highlights technological progress but also emphasizes the importance of community involvement and sustainable development.
One of the key highlights of SMARTCOM is the IoT Robotics Program, driven by UTM, represented by the academic and technical staf as well as undergraduate students from Faculty of Electrical Engineering (FKE). This initiative introduces innovative applications of the Internet of Things (IoT) and robotics technology to the local community, with a particular focus on Wallace Bay, Pulau Sebatik. Through hands-on workshops and interactive sessions, UTM aims to raise awareness and inspire creativity among the younger generation of Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Wallace Bay, helping them develop valuable skills in automation and IoT-based solutions. This effort aligns with UTM’s commitment to fostering innovation in rural and underserved communities while nurturing the next generation of tech talent.
In addition to the technical workshops, the SMARTCOM program also emphasizes community service. Participants have the chance to directly engage with the villagers of Wallace Bay, understanding their needs and contributing through collaborative projects. These initiatives aim to empower local residents, enhance infrastructure, and promote sustainable practices that will benefit the community long term of which led by UMS. By bridging the gap between academia and society, SMARTCOM ensures that the benefits of innovation and education are felt on the ground.
The success of this program is made possible through the generous support of PETRONAS, the Malaysian Relief Agency (MRA), etc. Their collaboration underscores a shared vision of promoting education, innovation, and social responsibility in East Malaysia.
