UTMKL at Rumah Rahoma: Growing Futures through Education

KUALA LUMPUR, June 25 – Steps away from Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) Kuala Lumpur, a meaningful partnership has blossomed between the university and Rumah Rahoma, a local care home for underprivileged children and one of UTM Kuala Lumpur’s closest community neighbours.

Tuisyen Rahoma 2025 is a tutoring program that reflects UTM Kuala Lumpur’s deep commitment to social responsibility, aiming to uplift vulnerable communities through education. Organised by the Off-Campus Student Committee (JKM PLK), this year marks the third year and fifth cycle of the program, which focuses on providing free English and Mathematics lessons to 29 children at Rumah Rahoma.

Over the course of ten weeks, facilitators from Kuala Lumpur—comprising both undergraduate and postgraduate students, as well as local and international participants—gather every Wednesday evening to teach, mentor, motivate, and emotionally support the children. The interactive modules have been thoughtfully designed to align with the national school syllabus, based on discussions with the children’s school teachers, ensuring relevance and consistency with their formal education.

“These children don’t just need lessons; they need the assurance that they are part of a larger academic journey, that their potential is real, and that they are not alone in striving for a future shaped by knowledge and opportunity,” said Diandra Azeeza Ridho, the Programme Director.

Dr. Mohamed Azlan Suhot, Principal of UTM Kuala Lumpur’s Off-Campus Students, has played a key role in guiding the content development to ensure it aligns with the academic needs of Rumah Rahoma’s students. He reaffirmed UTM’s belief that no child should be left behind.

“This effort is about academics, restoring hope, nurturing dignity, and sparking courage in the hearts of these children,” added Programme Advisor Mohamad Firdaus Majid.

Dato’ Hajjah Faridah Omar Shah, President of Pertubuhan Rahoma Darul Fakir Malaysia, expressed deep appreciation to UTM Kuala Lumpur: “We are truly touched by UTM’s unwavering commitment. The presence and care shown by their students mean the world to our children.”

The program serves as a powerful expression of UTM Kuala Lumpur’s alignment with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). By supporting the educational needs of children from low-income families, the initiative demonstrates the university’s commitment to eradicating poverty through access to education (SDG 1: No Poverty). Its focus on nurturing confidence and emotional strength contributes to promoting well-being (SDG 3: Good Health and Well-being). At the same time, the free academic support provided reinforces the right to quality education for all (SDG 4: Quality Education). Through the inclusive participation of both girls and boys, the program reaffirms its commitment to gender equality (SDG 5: Gender Equality) and marginalised educational disparities often faced by marginalised communities (SDG 10: Reduced Inequalities). Moreover, by strengthening the bond between the university and its surrounding neighbourhood, the program supports the development of a more inclusive and sustainable local community (SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities).

More than just a tuition program, Tuisyen Rahoma 2025 serves as a bridge of compassion—one that nurtures hope, restores dignity, and inspires a pathway to a brighter, more inclusive future.

Interactive modules in English were designed to match the school syllabus, but taught in ways that spark excitement.
