JOHOR BAHRU, Oct 17 – Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) has signed a Letter of Intent (LoI) with the University of Manchester (UoM) as part of its initiative to strengthen international collaborations.
The LoI was signed on October 17, 2024, during a visit by UoM representatives to the UTM Johor Bahru campus. UTM was represented by Professor Datuk Ir. Ts. Dr. Ahmad Fauzi Ismail, the Vice-Chancellor, while UoM was represented by Professor Stephen Flint, the Associate Vice-President for International Affairs.
The University of Manchester, ranked 34th in the QS World University Rankings, is a prestigious institution recognized for its academic excellence. This Letter of Intent (LoI) serves as a basis for both universities to explore potential collaborations in various areas, including joint research projects, academic programs, and student exchange initiatives.
Interestingly, UTM has a strong alumni network with the University of Manchester, as 39 UTM academic staff have graduated from the British institution. This existing connection provides a solid foundation for future collaborations.
The proposed collaboration between UTM and UoM covers a broad range of fields, including science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM), environmental and air quality studies, carbon capture and storage, flood resistance, power systems, and various interdisciplinary areas within the social sciences and humanities. These collaborations have the potential to lead to impactful research, innovative solutions, and valuable academic experiences for both students and faculty from the two institutions.
