UTM and MHB Collaborate on River Rehabilitation Programme

Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM), under the Centre for Environmental Sustainability and Water Security (IPASA), participated in a Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) exchange ceremony for the MHB River Rehabilitation Programme, celebrating Petronas’ 50th anniversary. The event took place at Laman Rekreasi Sungai Buluh, Pasir Gudang, Johor on 30th June 2024.

Leading the ceremony were YB Ling Tian Soon, Johor EXCO for Health and Environment, and Mr. Mohd Nazir Mohd Nor, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Malaysia Marine and Heavy Engineering Holdings Berhad (MHB), accompanied by other MHB delegates. UTM was represented by its Vice Chancellor, Professor Datuk Ir. Ts. Dr. Ahmad Fauzi Ismail, along with Prof. Dr. Azmi Aris, Director of the Research Institute for Sustainable Environment (RISE), and Prof. Ir. Ts. Dr. Mohd Fadhil Md Din, Fellow/Programme Leader from IPASA. The event also saw the attendance of dedicated facilitators and volunteers from UTM.

MHB has demonstrated its strong commitment to sustainability through its River Rehabilitation Programme. This initiative is part of MHB’s broader efforts to integrate environmental, social, and governance (ESG) principles into its activities. The programme is a collaborative project between MHB, Pasir Gudang City Council (MBPG), UTM, and the local community of Pasir Gudang, Johor. The collaboration was officiated with the signing of the MoA in April 2024.

To improve the health of Sungai Buluh by mitigating pollution threats, MHB has established a 3-year strategic roadmap focusing on four key initiatives: Stakeholder Awareness and Education, River Revitalisation, Greening and Decarbonisation, and Capacity Building and Training.
