SINGAPORE, Jul 30 — Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) reinforced its commitment to regional academic-industry convergence during the recent Regional Innovation & Networking Conference (RINC) 2026, hosted by Singapore Polytechnic. The UTM delegation was led by Assoc. Prof. Ir. Ts. Dr. Muhamad Azizi Mat Yajid, Acting Dean of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering (FKM), representing the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic and International). The strategic delegation also featured key representatives across the university, including Dr. Ahmad Nabil Md. Nasir, representing the Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone (UTM JS-SEZ) Unit, alongside Assoc. Prof. Dr. Noorsidi Aizuddin and Dr. Mohammad Zakri Tarmidi, representing the Faculty of Built Environment and Surveying (FABU). The conference served as a premier platform for expanding strategic networks, addressing cross-border economic frameworks and formalizing high-impact technological partnerships to drive regional innovation.

A major milestone of the conference was the official Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signing ceremony between UTM, represented by the UTM JS-SEZ and NEO Aeronautics. This landmark partnership aims to accelerate technological advancement, joint research and aerospace capabilities, further strengthening the regional technological ecosystem across Malaysia and Singapore. Beyond academic collaboration, the agreement paves the way for specialized industrial training, talent development, student exchange opportunities and joint research projects in advanced technology and aerospace mobility.
Delegates actively participated in a dedicated parallel forum session focused on the strategic vision, opportunities, and operational dynamics of the Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone. The interactive session brought together key academic, government and industry stakeholders to deliberate on several critical areas, beginning with policy alignment and direction to evaluate strategic goals, regulatory harmonization, and the current pace of development.
Additionally, discussions centered on operational dynamics by analyzing real-world challenges, trade-offs, spatial planning, and practical considerations in cross-border execution. The session concluded with a strong focus on bilateral synergy, where participants formulated actionable recommendations to deepen cross-border cooperation, enhance supply chain integration and foster long-term sustainable economic growth.

Throughout the event, Dr. Muhamad Azizi and the UTM delegation engaged with academic peers from Singapore Polytechnic and regional industry leaders. Discussions centered on creating joint talent development programs, driving interdisciplinary research initiatives and establishing sustainable innovation pipelines to support regional industries.
