The experience strengthened international academic ties and reinforced UTM’s commitment to producing globally competent graduates.
SENDAI, May 10 – A group of 22 enthusiastic participants from the Department of Biomedical Engineering and Health Sciences, Faculty of Electrical Engineering (FKE), Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) recently returned from a transformative journey to Tohoku University, Sendai, Japan, where they took part in the Global Outreach Program. Held from 4 to 10 May 2026, the program offered students a rich blend of academic, cultural, and personal growth experiences in one of the world’s fastest-growing innovation hubs.
At Aobayama New Campus of Tohoku University, the delegates from UTM were warmly received by the administrative and academic staff of the Graduate School. Upon arrival at NanoTerasu in Aobayama New Campus of Tohoku University on 7 May 2026, the delegation, comprising 20 students from the Biomedical Engineering programme and two accompanying lecturers, Dr. Muhammad Faiz Md Shakhih and Dr. Nadia Shaira Shafii.

On the first day, the program commenced with an official visit to NanoTerasu Synchrotron Light Source, where participants were introduced to the mechanism, configuration, and history of NanoTerasu by Masataka Kado, Promotion and Public Relations Group Leader, NanoTerasu Secretariat, National Institute for Quantum Science and Technology (QST).
On the second day, the highlights of the program were the industry visit to the Institute of Fluid Science (IFS), which exposed students to advanced biomedical research and translational science initiatives. The visit allowed students to observe how advanced laboratory research is aligned with real-world healthcare applications, particularly in areas related to biomedical innovation and medical technology development.
The delegation also visited the OHTA & ANZAI Lab under the supervision of Prof. Makoto Ohta. UTM students received a lot of knowledge through the sharing from the postgraduate students of IFS, Tohoku University. These visits provided a practical understanding of how academic research is translated into clinical and commercial outcomes, reinforcing the relevance of their biomedical engineering studies.

More laboratory visits around the IFS, Tohoku University, that explained more about the mechanical and application for the research study of Flow in Helical Stents anda 3D view of the applications.
Academic enrichment continued with a lecture session delivered by a student of Prof. Makoto Ohta, offering students insight into current research trends in The Study of Different Expansion Shapes and Their Effects on Flow in Helical Stents: Experimental and Computational Methods.
UTM Biomedical Engineering students also shared some insights on the research of Flow of Characteristics of an Axial Hollow Pump for Fontan Circulation by Tee Hui Ying.

At the end of the visitation day at Tohoku University, Prof. Makoto Ohta invited the UTM delegation to have lunch together with Tohoku University students. This encouraged a deeper bond between these two universities’ students as they spent time sharing about each country’s culture in food, studies, etc.

Overall, the Global Outreach Program provided a meaningful platform for UTM Biomedical Engineering students to enhance their global outlook, academic confidence, and professional readiness. The experience not only strengthened international academic ties but also reinforced UTM’s commitment to producing globally competent graduates equipped to thrive in the evolving biomedical engineering field.
