KUALA LUMPUR, May 23 – A vibrant community outreach program titled Safety of Household Chemicals: From Awareness to Action was successfully organized through a strategic collaboration between Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) and Public Housing (PA) of Desa Rajang Residents Association at the Kolej Siswa Jaya (KSJ), Kuala Lumpur. The program attracted 30 participants comprising residents, youths, parents, and community representatives from the various neighborhood blocks.

The initiative was conducted as part of the university’s ongoing commitment towards community engagement, knowledge transfer, and public safety awareness. Recognizing that household chemicals are extensively used in everyday domestic activities, the program aimed to educate the community on the importance of safe handling, proper storage, emergency response, and environmentally responsible disposal of chemical products commonly found at home.

Products such as detergents, disinfectants, bleach, aerosol sprays, insecticides, and cleaning agents may appear harmless during routine use; however, improper handling or storage can contribute to serious health and environmental risks, including accidental poisoning, respiratory complications, skin irritation, and indoor pollution. Through this program, participants were provided with practical exposure and scientific understanding of potential household chemical hazards and preventive safety practices.

One of the most inspiring highlights of the program was the participation of 10 individuals from a previous session who returned voluntarily to support the current session by sharing their experiences and practical knowledge with newly registered participants. Their active involvement created an engaging peer-learning environment and demonstrated the sustainability of community empowerment initiatives implemented by the organizing institutions.

The returning participants shared real-life experiences on implementing safer chemical management practices at home, including the importance of reading hazard labels, separating incompatible substances, ensuring child-safe storage, and responding effectively during chemical exposure incidents. Their contributions not only strengthened participant engagement but also reflected the positive impact of the continuous educational outreach program within the local community.

The program featured a variety of interactive activities, including safety awareness talks, practical demonstrations, group discussions, quizzes, and educational sharing sessions related to hazard symbols, chemical labelling systems, first aid procedures, and safe disposal methods for household chemical waste. Participants were also exposed to environmentally sustainable practices aimed at reducing domestic chemical pollution and promoting responsible household management.

The collaboration with UTM further enhanced the program by integrating multidisciplinary academic perspectives and sustainability-oriented approaches into the community engagement activities. The involvement of academic staff and students contributed significantly towards creating an interactive and impactful learning atmosphere for the participants.

According to the program advisor, initiatives focusing on household chemical safety are increasingly important as communities are continuously exposed to various chemical substances through daily domestic activities.

“Many people underestimate the potential risks associated with household chemicals because these products are commonly used in everyday life. However, without proper awareness and safety practices, these substances may pose significant risks to human health and the environment. Programs like this are important in building a more informed and safety-conscious community,” the advisor explained.

The advisor further emphasized that the involvement of returning participants symbolized the success of knowledge transfer and sustainable community engagement practices.

“The participation of previous program participants in guiding and educating new community members demonstrates that a awareness program can create a long-term impact beyond a single event. This is an excellent example of how communities themselves can become agents of change and safety awareness,” the advisor added.

Participants responded enthusiastically throughout the program, particularly during the practical demonstrations and interactive discussion sessions. Many expressed appreciation for the useful knowledge and practical skills gained during the event, stating that the program had increased their awareness regarding the importance of proper chemical safety management within domestic environments.

The successful implementation of the program reflects the strong commitment of UTM and PA Desa Rajang Residents Association towards strengthening community well-being, environmental responsibility, and public safety awareness through impactful educational outreach initiatives.

The program is expected to serve as a catalyst for future collaborations and community-based educational activities that promote safer living practices, environmental sustainability, and responsible chemical management within society.
