Psychology students showcase leadership through global engagement in Jakarta

JAKARTA, Nov 29 – The Psychology students from the School of Human Resource Development and Psychology (SHARPS), Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities (FSSH), Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM), recently joined an outbound mobility programme to Universitas Mercu Buana (UMB), Jakarta, from 25 to 29 November 2025. The trip offered the students a meaningful chance to learn psychology in an international environment while gaining new experiences, friendships, and personal growth.

During the visit, students attended classes, shared academic ideas, joined discussions, and presented their work together with the lecturers and psychology students at UMB. These activities helped them understand different ways of learning psychology, improve their confidence, and develop important skills such as communication, teamwork, and intercultural understanding. Many students expressed that the discussions and classroom interactions opened their eyes to how psychology is taught and applied in other countries.

One of the most memorable experiences was joining UMB’s Open House, which welcomed secondary school students from around Jakarta. UTM students took part in sharing sessions and activities that introduced psychology and university life to the younger students. Seeing the excitement and curiosity of the school students gave UTM participants a strong feeling of purpose and reminded them how education can inspire and change lives.

The programme became even more special because it took place during the 19th Anniversary celebration of UMB’s Faculty of Psychology. UTM students were invited to join the celebration and were warmly welcomed by the UMB community. The celebration created a friendly and emotional atmosphere, and students felt proud to be part of an international academic family.

Another important highlight was the Service-Learning programme at Madrasah Mis Alhusna, a centre that supports children in the local community, including children with special needs. UTM students conducted expressive activities, art sessions and simple therapeutic interactions that encouraged the children to communicate, express themselves, and enjoy learning in a positive environment. Many students were touched by the children’s joy, openness, and strength, and shared how this experience taught them patience, empathy, and understanding.

For many, this visit was more than just an academic programme. It became a personal journey that built confidence, shaped character, and strengthened their reasons for choosing psychology. The emotional moments shared with children, new friends, and lecturers from another country created memories that students will carry for a very long time.

Overall, this outbound programme successfully strengthened the collaboration between UTM and UMB while giving UTM Psychology students valuable international exposure. More importantly, it taught them how knowledge, compassion, and community service can come together to make a real difference.
