Che'er on her graduation day

Psychology Graduate Che’er Mintong Receives Prestigious Royal Education Award

JOHOR BAHRU, 15 November 2025 – In a celebration of academic excellence at UTM, one student truly stood out. Che’er Mintong, a graduate from the Faculty of Science and Humanities, stole the spotlight when she was honoured with the Royal Education Award for her outstanding academic achievements and active contributions throughout her studies.

The prestigious award recognises students who not only perform academically but also show strong dedication to co-curricular activities and community service. Che’er, who majored in Psychology with Human Resources Development, started her degree in 2021 after completing her foundation at UTM in 2020.

Her passion for psychology began at a young age, inspired by television programs showing how psychologists could heal through conversation. Her interest grew when she helped a secondary school friend struggling with depression and realised the power of good communication. She was amazed that psychology could help someone recover from within, and that’s when she knew this was her path.

Despite the challenges that peppered her academic journey, Che’er’s resilience shone through. She faced scepticism from others who questioned her choice of field, with some even suggesting that a career in psychology had no future. However, she remained steadfast in her passion, buoyed by the unwavering support of her parents.

“They always said that passion is the most important. Without it, it’s easy to give up.” Che’er said during an interview.

Che’er Mintong started her degree during the COVID-19 pandemic, facing online classes, internet problems, and a full schedule since she was already involved in a few clubs at UTM. Still, when the campus reopened in 2022, she fully threw herself into student life, joining multiple clubs like AIESECS and TEDXUTM, serving in (Student Representative Council Election Committee) JPMPP UTM, and later becoming a Student Representative Council (MPP UTM) member at the 2023/2024 session, gaining leadership experience while building lasting friendships.

Being a degree student was not easy for Che’er. She often rushed from early morning classes to late meetings for events, and had little time to rest. Still, her passion never faded; every challenge that she faced only made her love for psychology stronger and helped her grow into a confident student and a good leader.

Che’er expresses her gratitude to her parents for their unwavering support and belief in her choices. She also thanks Dr. Nurul Izzah for guidance and encouragement throughout her final-year project and broader psychological insights. With the support of her family, mentor, and active involvement in university clubs, Che’er has successfully created a remarkable academic journey.

Che’er now works as a Special Education Interventionist, teaching children with special needs, while planning to pursue a master’s degree in the next one or two years. She advises the younger generation.

“If you are interested and passionate, just go for it. Don’t overthink what others say. You won’t know your limits until you try.”

The Royal Education Award recognises Che’er’s academic achievements and her dedication to making a positive societal impact. She also encourages students to embrace co-curricular activities.

“Don’t limit yourself to studying. Join clubs, meet people, and get involved. That’s where you grow the most.”

Her journey highlights her as one of UTM’s most inspiring graduates.
