JOHOR BAHRU, Aug 28 – The program “Bijak Tenaga: Understanding the New TNB Tariff” was successfully organized through a collaboration between the Centre of Electrical Energy Systems (CEES), the Institute of Future Energy (IFE), the IEEE Power and Energy Society (IEEE PES) Malaysia Chapter, and the Faculty of Electrical Engineering (FKE), Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM).
Held at Bilik Demo 2, Block P16, FKE, UTM Johor Bahru, the half-day event drew more than 60 participants, including UTM staff, students, and members of the surrounding community. The program aimed to enhance understanding of Tenaga Nasional Berhad’s (TNB) new electricity tariff, while promoting the importance of wise and responsible energy consumption.
Participants gained valuable insights from Prof. Ir. Dr. Md Pauzi Abdullah, Director of IFE UTM, who unpacked the new tariff structure in detail. His session explained the shift from the old system to the new, breaking down components such as generation charges, network charges, and retail charges. He also clarified the difference between Imbalance Cost Pass-Through (ICPT) and the new Automatic Fuel Adjustment (AFA), noting that the latter provides greater bill stability for consumers. In addition, he introduced the Time of Use (ToU) tariff for domestic users, emphasizing that “lower bills are possible only if we truly understand our usage patterns and make smart choices about when to use electricity.”
Adding a practical dimension, Assoc. Prof. Ir. Dr. Mohd Hafiz Habibuddin, Research Fellow at CEES UTM, conducted a hands-on workshop on electricity bill calculations. Participants worked through actual household bills using prepared worksheets, helping them better grasp consumption patterns and identify cost-saving opportunities.
To further strengthen the program’s impact, TNB participated through an interactive consultation booth, offering direct engagement with participants. The delegation, led by Ummi Khalthom Md Ali and supported by Nurhidayah Abu Bakar along with 10 other representatives, provided valuable insights. TNB also showcased its electric vehicle (EV), the EV Maxus, giving participants first-hand exposure to the latest electric mobility technology. This collaboration highlighted TNB’s role in advancing energy literacy and reaffirmed its commitment to Malaysia’s net-zero carbon aspirations.
The program’s success was driven by the leadership of Program Manager, Assoc. Prof. Ts. Dr. Norzanah Rosmin, Director of CEES UTM; the guidance of Program Advisor, Assoc. Prof. Ir. Ts. Dr. Jasrul Jamani Jamian; the efforts of Program Lead, Dr. Nurul Nadia Ibrahim; and the dedication of the organizing committee.
The organizers extended sincere appreciation to TNB, the invited speakers, participants, and committee members for their strong support. Moving forward, the collaborative team envisions “Bijak Tenaga” as a Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative, empowering the UTM community and the public towards more sustainable and efficient energy practices.
