Deloitte @ FC: Tech Careers through Reflection and Strategy

JOHOR BAHRU, June 17 – The Faculty of Computing (FC) at Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM), in collaboration with the UTM Career Centre (UTMCC), hosted an exclusive campus engagement titled “From Campus to Career: Discover Deloitte” with Deloitte Consulting (SEA) Sdn. Bhd. This event was attended by approximately fifty final-year students from various programs within the FC, all of whom were preparing to enter the workforce. It provided valuable insights into technology careers and helped enhance their career readiness.

Students were introduced to two distinct career paths within Deloitte’s Technology & Transformation practice: Technical Track and Consulting Track

Deloitte, a global leader in professional services, plays a vital role in shaping the digital economy through its Technology & Transformation (T&T) practice. The recent visit to UTM highlights its ongoing efforts to strengthen connections between academia and industry, while fostering the development of future tech professionals.

The session was led by Chen Ling Hong, the Regional Early Careers Talent Acquisition Senior Specialist, and supported by Tan Meng Jie, the Regional Early Careers Talent Acquisition Manager. Together, they provided a dynamic and engaging experience for students, combining career exploration with hands-on activities that fostered a deeper understanding of the field.

The session began with a fun icebreaker called “Guess the Role (Emoji Edition),” where students matched emojis to various tech roles. This created an engaging atmosphere for a discussion about Deloitte’s two main career tracks: the Technical Track and the Consulting Track. A live Mentimeter poll enabled students to consider which path best aligned with their strengths and interests.

Afterwards, students participated in a Strengths-Values-Career Path Reflection activity using Padlet. Prompts such as “What energizes you at work?” and “Do you prefer building, leading, or analyzing?” encouraged students to gain personal insights into how their natural tendencies could shape their career direction.

A resume-building session followed, during which students learned how to write concise, action-oriented bullet points that align with job descriptions. This was paired with a group activity focused on the STAR interview method (Situation, Task, Action, Result). Students structured their real-life experiences into interview-ready narratives and received feedback from their peers.

“I appreciated that the session wasn’t just about where to find work, but also about understanding who we are and recognizing our natural strengths. That made it feel personal and motivating,” shared Muhammad Najmi Zulhusni bin Mohd Sapuan, a final-year student in the Computer Graphics and Multimedia Software program at the Faculty of Computing.

The event concluded with a Q&A session and photo opportunities, marking a memorable afternoon of learning and reflection. The Deloitte team expressed enthusiasm for future collaborations and ongoing engagement with UTM students.

Looking ahead, opportunities such as resume clinics, mock interviews, case challenges, and inclusive outreach across various faculties could further strengthen this partnership. UTM sincerely thanks the Deloitte SEA T&T Campus Hire Team for their commitment to supporting career readiness and fostering student growth.
