KAGOSHIMA, 24 Feb – Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) proudly participated in the KOSEN Global Camp 2024 at the National Institute of Technology (Kōtō Senmon Gakkō – KOSEN), Kagoshima College. UTM selected three outstanding students and one lecturer from various faculties to represent Malaysia at this international event: Assoc. Prof. Ir. Dr. Rini Asnida Abdullah from the Faculty of Civil Engineering, Yong How King (Bachelor of Civil Engineering), Nabil Ikhwan Sharudin (Diploma in Computer Science), and Izzati Athirah Isa (Bachelor of Software Engineering).
The camp brought together 95 students from around the world, including participants from Japan, Sweden, and Taiwan, promoting collaboration in engineering, computer science, and robotics. The event was officially inaugurated on the first day by Isana Takeno, a fourth-year student at Kagoshima National College of Technology and the camp’s management leader, along with Toru Kuniya, the organizing chairman.

In the lead-up to the event, participants attended online workshops in December 2024 to prepare for the hands-on challenges in Kagoshima. Upon arrival, they immediately engaged in problem-solving using Micro:bit technology, focusing on real-world issues such as automating fish feeding in aquaculture. Each team designed prototypes using recycled materials and 3D printing, combining sustainability with innovation.
Beyond the technological aspects, the camp also tested communication and leadership skills. With students from diverse linguistic backgrounds, language barriers could have hindered progress. However, innovation is not solely about machines; it’s also about people. Participants utilized Google Translate, gestures, and patience to overcome these challenges, demonstrating that the language of teamwork is universal.

UTM students achieved remarkable success at the KOSEN Global Camp 2024. Yong How King’s team won the Gold Prize for their innovative smart shrimp molt collection system, which is transforming aquaculture practices. Their practical, sustainable, and impactful invention captivated the judges, earning them the title of champions.
Additionally, Nabil and his team demonstrated the power of young minds by creating real solutions to real-world challenges, making their recognition a significant honor and a historic moment. Izzati Athirah was also acknowledged for her excellent leadership, guiding her team in Micro:bit implementation and prototype development, despite facing a language barrier with participants from different countries. These achievements truly showcased UTM’s excellence on the global stage.

At that moment, the competition was about more than just winning. It was about UTM making its mark on the world stage, demonstrating that Malaysian students could compete with the best, pushing boundaries and turning ideas into reality. These victories were not merely wins; they were legacies in the making.
Beyond the competition, the camp facilitated cultural exchange and fostered lifelong friendships. Students delved into Kagoshima’s rich heritage, making the experience both educational and transformative. As they returned to Malaysia, they brought lessons of resilience, teamwork, and innovation, proving that stepping outside their comfort zones leads to a lasting impact. The KOSEN Global Camp 2024 was more than just an event; it was a significant milestone in global collaboration and a testament to UTM’s commitment to innovation.

As the students returned to Malaysia, they brought back more than just knowledge. They carried memories of teamwork, lessons in resilience, and a renewed passion for innovation. The KOSEN Global Camp 2024 was not merely an event; it was a milestone, a catalyst for future collaborations, and a testament to UTM’s commitment to global engagement. This journey demonstrated one key idea: the world belongs to those who dare to step beyond their comfort zones, embrace challenges, and create solutions that leave a lasting impact. For these students, this was just the beginning.
