SPE-UTM SC ALUKEP TALK 2024: Alumni Share Vital Insights with Petroleum Engineering Students

On 8th June 2024, the Society of Petroleum Engineers – UTM Student Chapter (SPE-UTM SC) hosted the ALUKEP [Alumni Kejuruteraan Petroleum] TALK 2024 online via Webex. This event offered Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) students, particularly those in petroleum engineering, invaluable insights into the oil and gas industry from distinguished UTM alumni who are making significant contributions to the sector.

The speakers included Mr. Ts. Faiz Latip, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Semarak Training; Mr. Anas Asalem from SLB; and Ms. Shahida Sulleh from Petronas. Each provided unique perspectives on career pathways, future energy trends, and technological advancements.

Mr. Faiz Latip emphasized the importance of continuous learning and adaptability, discussing the energy trilemma of security, sustainability, and affordability. He highlighted Malaysia’s goal to increase oil production and the critical need for talent in the industry. Stressing the importance of planning and resilience, he quoted, “He who fails to plan is planning to fail.”

Mr. Anas Asalem advised graduates to avoid being choosy, build a strong personal brand, and engage in networking. He underscored the competitive nature of the industry and the importance of being well-equipped.

Ms. Shahida Sulleh discussed the life cycle of oil fields and the significance of understanding Carbon Capture, Utilization, and Storage (CCUS). She provided a strategy for success, emphasizing good grades, upskilling, exploring opportunities, and saving money. She also gave advice on personal branding, including finding strengths, using social platforms, and sharing informative content consistently.

The event provided students with an in-depth understanding of the industry, covering career development, energy transitions, and the evolving landscape of petroleum engineering. It underscored the need for adaptability, continuous learning, and technological proficiency in addressing industry challenges while emphasizing the importance of sustainability and innovation in shaping the future of the energy sector.

Overall, the SPE-UTM SC ALUKEP TALK 2024 was a resounding success, enriching students’ understanding of the oil and gas industry and inspiring them to pursue excellence in their careers. The event highlighted the importance of continuous learning, adaptability, and resilience in a rapidly changing world.
