SKUDAI, 30th May 2024 – The Quantity Surveying Department and QS-Bina Society successfully co-organized the QS-Construction Career Carnival 2024 on the 29th and 30th of May at Convention Hall B12, Faculty of Built Environment & Surveying (FABU), Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) in Johor Bahru. The event involved 120 final-year students from the Quantity Surveying program.
Day 1 Highlights
The schedule for the day was packed with informative sessions designed to equip students with essential skills and knowledge. Here are the highlights:
Slot 1: “How to Get Yourself Employed” by UTM Career Centre-Talent Corp, providing vital job-seeking tips.
Slot 2: “Financial Literacy for Young Graduates” also by UTM Career Centre-Talent Corp, guiding students on managing finances post-graduation.
Slot 3: “Exploring Career Opportunities in Singapore” by LCH Quantity Surveying Pte Ltd, opening avenues for international careers.
Slot 4: “Industry Engagement with WB” by Woon Brother Construction, emphasizing practical industry insights.
Slot 5: “Image Matters: Crafting Your Professional Persona Through Personal Grooming” by Dr. Nor Zafir Md Salleh, focusing on professional appearance and demeanor.
After lunch, the event included a Mock Interview and Exhibition Session, which connected students with industry employers from well-known companies such as Pakatan Ukur Bahan, JB Bergabung, Total QS Services, KAS Juruukur Bahan Sdn. Bhd., and MRQS Consultant. The exhibition also featured booths by Total QS Services, JQS International Sdn. Bhd., Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB), Malaysia Board of Technology (MBOT), Woon Brothers Construction Sdn. Bhd., and LCH Quantity Surveying Pte Ltd.
Day 2 Highlights
The second day was similar to the first day in its schedule, starting with registration at 8:30 AM. After the recitation of Doa and the national anthem, Sr. Dr. Muzani Mustapa, Director of the Quantity Surveying Department, warmly welcomed the participants and industry guests.
Day two featured a series of professional body slots:
Slot 1: A presentation by the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS), offering a global perspective on the profession.
Slot 2: Insights from the Malaysian Asset and Project Management (MAPMA) on asset management.
Slot 3: An MBOT, emphasizing technological advancements in surveying.
Slot 4: ‘Construction Professional’ by the Construction Industry Development Board (CIDB) Johor, focusing on industry standards and practices.
Slot 5: An engagement session with the CIOB, highlighting professional development opportunities.
The two-day event was organized to help students transition from academic life to professional careers in the construction industry. It included informative talks, hands-on sessions, and networking opportunities with industry leaders.
The event ended at 12:30 PM, providing students with valuable knowledge and improved career prospects. The QS-Construction Career Carnival 2024 not only connected academia and industry but also empowered students to confidently and competently navigate their professional journeys.
