UTM Faculty of Computing Undergraduates Shine at Fusion 2023 Student Design Competition

Two teams comprising talented final-year undergraduate students from the Faculty of Computing (FC) at [University Name] have clinched top honors at the prestigious Fusion 2023 Student Design Competition. The remarkable achievement included Grand Placings, a Special Jury Award, and Gold and Bronze Awards.

Held virtually on September 9, 2023, the Fusion 2023 Student Design Competition was conducted in conjunction with the 5th National Symposium on Human-Computer Interaction, organized by the Kuala Lumpur ACM SIGCHI Chapter (myHCI-UX). The event serves as a platform for students to exhibit their problem-solving prowess and design acumen while proposing user-centered solutions to real-world challenges. Students from various institutions across Malaysia participated, showcasing the high level of competition.

The competition featured two distinct categories: concept and development. Teams submitted posters, videos, and extended abstracts, which underwent an initial round of rigorous evaluation. On the day of the competition, the teams presented their prototypes to a panel of judges representing esteemed national institutions and industry experts.

In a resounding victory for the FC, the following teams secured notable awards:

Concept Category:

  1. Team MAJU, consisting of Neo Zheng Weng, Wong Khai Shian Nicholas, and Joseph Lau Yeo Kai, under the guidance of Dr. Layla Hasan, took home the coveted 1st Place award, the Jury Award for Best of the Best Undergraduate, and the Gold Award. Their winning entry, titled “Designing Online Local Public Transportation Application,” demonstrated exceptional innovation and problem-solving skills.
  2. Team Two, comprising Low Ying Xi, Nur Aleysha Qurratu’aini Mat Salleh, and Nadhrah Nursabrina Zulaini, also mentored by Dr. Layla Hasan, clinched the Bronze Award in the Concept category for their outstanding entry, “Redesigning the Weather Channel Website.”

Development Category:

  1. Chai Ming Choy, a final-year undergraduate student under the guidance of Dr. Nur Zuraifah Syazrah Othman, secured 3rd Place and the Gold Award in the Development category with his impressive entry, “Hand Gesture Based Solar System Exploration for Science Education.”
  2. Lai Ting Ying, another final-year undergraduate, guided by Assoc. Prof. Ts. Dr. Masitah Ghazali, secured 4th Place and the Gold Award with her entry, “Solare: Solar Power Assistant Application (SPAA),” in the Development category.

The exceptional accomplishments of these FC students reflect the dedication, innovation, and expertise cultivated within the faculty. The students were enrolled in the course SECV2113 Human-Computer Interaction, which specializes in user-centred design and UI/UX. Course coordinator Dr. Nur Zuraifah Syazrah Othman said, “The knowledge gained from the course helped the students prepare a user-centred design solution for the competition, and along the way, exposed them to the growing significance of UI/UX in the research and industry landscape today. We thank FC for the continuous support and hope to continue to guide the students for more participation in other UI/UX-related student competitions.”
