IoT Innovation Hackathon for FKE UTM – Seagate International Community Program 2023

The corporate social responsibility (CSR) of the Electronic and Computer Engineering Department of the Faculty of Electrical Engineering (FKE), UTM and Seagate International (Johor) Sdn. Bhd. has been conducted since 2016. This year, one of the programmes conducted is the IoT Innovation Hackathon, which was held at Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) Makerspace.

The 30 selected schools were from districts of Johor Bahru, Pontian, Kota Tinggi, Kulai and Pasir Gudang. Each of the groups is represented by two students and one teacher. Throughout this 1-day program, the participants learnt to build an Internet-of-thing (IoT) innovation by using ESP32 and Blynk. They were facilitated by the lecturers, assistant engineers and students of FKE. The module focus on the development of IoT device with Tinkercode block programming and the development of mobile application using the Blynk platform. Once programmed, the participants could control their devices as their desired. For this program, each group, which was represented by a teacher and students, must develop their prototype based on the given SDG. They pitched their innovation to the panellist. The top five winners received awards and PAJSK recognition.
