Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) Razak Faculty of Technology and Informatics (RFTI), successfully organized the Distinguished Lecture Series #1 on 10th March 2022.

The title of the lecture was ‘Cybersecurity Governance’ and it was conducted online through Webex and Facebook Live.

The lecture was attended by 50 participants from various local and international universities.

The invited speaker is a Research Professor in the Academy for Computer Science and Software Engineering, the Director of the Centre for Cyber Security at the University of Johannesburg, as well as the Associate Director of the Global Cybersecurity Capacity Centre of the University of Oxford in the United Kingdom, Prof. Basie Von Solms.

Prof. Basie is a past member of the World Economic Forum’s Global Future Council for Cyber Security and also the past President of the International Federation for Information Processing (IFIP) from 2008 to 2010.

The Distinguished Public Lecture Series was related to one of the programme offered in RFTI, Master of Science (Information Assurance), which is sub domain of Cyber security area.

The event was moderated by Dr. Fiza Abdul Rahim, who is also an expert in the cybersecurity area.

To enhance the academic ambience and stimulate intellectual vitality, the university invited world renowned scholars, high calibre figures of the community and social elites to deliver Distinguished Public Lectures on a wide range of interesting topics to the university community and members of the public.

The Distinguished University Lecture Series provided a platform for the university community to listen to, meet, and talk with distinguished speakers.

It encouraged the introduction of new and exciting ideas and offered a forum for the exchange of knowledge.

The session started with a welcoming session by FTIR Acting Deputy Dean (Academic and Student Affairs), Assoc. Prof. Dr. Samira Albati Kamaruddin.

She welcomed all the participants and highlighted the importance of cybersecurity for the digital era.

Following that, the speaker, Prof. Basie started the session with an opening of the definition related on cybersecurity and Information Technology Governance.

The speaker also highlighted that Cybersecurity in the 4th Industrial Revolution has many challenges such as on ransomware attacks, Internet of Things (IoTs), Internet of Medical Things, Artificial Intelligence, Facial Recognition and in Autonomous System.

He also proposed some of the new research direction by the academician and researchers to focus on three main area of cybersecurity which are among small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), IoTs and Medical IoTs that need further attention.

Finally, he emphasized on how cybersecurity governance becomes the responsibility of the the board of director in management and it must involved from board, down to every single employee. Employees must play a role as a cybercrime fighters to help in protecting the organization too.
