Newbies Camp ’21 as an Essential Introductory Session for UTM Computing Students

On 22 October 2021, Persatuan Mahasiswa Sains Komputer (PERSAKA), Universiti Teknologi Malaysia organized a program, “Newbies Camp 2021” for all School of Computing first-year students. The program was held online through Webex platform.

This program aimed to expose new students the insights to their respected field of program, besides encouraging them to participate in extracurricular activities. The main objective of this program was to share knowledge and experience of all programs offered in the School of Computing and give early exposure about Online and Distance Learning to the new students.

This program was a collaborated programme with the First Year Experience (FYE). Thus, Newbies Camp 2021 was tailored specially for the School of Computing students.

The Chair of the School of Computing, Prof. Ts. Dr. Wan Mohd Nasir bin Wan Kadir and the Advisor of PERSAKA, Dr. Muhammad Iqbal Tariq bin Idris were invited to give an opening speech and officiate the Newbies Camp ’21 Opening Ceremony.

Newbies Camp’21 provided a platform for junior and senior students to interact with each other and strengthen their bonds. This program was carried out with five breakout sessions where the first-year students joined according to their respective courses which are SECB (Bioinformatics), SECJ (Software Engineering), SECP (Data Engineering), SECR (Networks and Security) and SECV (Graphics and Multimedia).

There were also sharing sessions on important information such as “Info Sharing by Penyelaras Pembangunan Pelajar to All Year One Students” conducted by Dr. Suhaila binti Mohamad Yusuf from the Coordinator of Student Development.

The program was then continued with “How to Cope with ODL” session conducted by Dr. Nurbiha binti A Shukor from UTM Academic Leadership (UTMLead). During this session, Dr. Nurbiha explained the rules and regulations that need to be implemented by students during online classes. Dr. Nurbiha also added tips and tricks that might benefit the students during their online classes.

Last but not least, Associate Chair of the School of Computing, Prof. Ts. Dr. Dayang Norhayati binti Abang Jawawi was invited to give a closing speech and officiate the Newbies Camp ’21 Closing Ceremony. In a nutshell, this program had run successfully and wrapped up smoothly with over 200 participants which exceeded the target views of 100 participants.
