Recently, Prof. Dr. Nor Haniza Sarmin, Director (Global Strategy and Engagement) in UTM International and Professor of Mathematics in the Department of Mathematical Sciences, Faculty of Science, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM), was featured as one of the lecturers in the Indonesian Mathematical Society (IndoMS) School 2021 program on 12 until 23 July 2021.

The program virtual lectures were held via Zoom and hosted by Universitas Airlangga in collaboration with Himpunan Matematika Indonesia Mathematics Undergraduate Study Program, Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR), Universitas Brawijaya (UB) and Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB). IndoMS School 2021 offered diverse topics which included mathematics education, statistics, actuary and algebra.

IndoMS School 2021 was strived to maintain the Gerakan Merdeka Belajar-Kampus Merdeka (MBKM) initiative and international collaboration, as well as to maintain the quality of education during the challenging time of the global pandemic. Each two-week lecture had a total of 44 class hours and can be recognized as an elective course with a credit load of two. The methods used to evaluate students’ progress in these virtual lectures were similar to physical lectures which consist of tutorials and assignments.

On Monday, 19 July 2021, Prof. Haniza had given a lecture in the IndoMS School 2021 under the topic “Algebra, Graphs, and Their Relations”. This three-hour lecture had also included the sub-topic of “The Topological Indices of Some Graphs Associated to Some Groups”. The lecture was then followed by a two-hour tutorial and an assignment via Google Classroom.

This virtual class was attended by more than 30 participants, where all of them were from universities around Indonesia, including Institut Agama Islam Negeri Kediri, Institut Teknologi dan Sains Nahdlatul Ulama Pasuruan, Institut Teknologi Kalimantan, Sekolah Tinggi Ilmu Al-Qur’an dan Sains Al-Ishlah, UIN Raden Intan Lampung, Universitas Airlangga, Universitas Brawijaya, Universitas Gadjah Mada, Universitas Mataram, Universitas Negeri Yogyakarta and Universitas Terbuka. Among of the participants were undergraduate, master and doctoral degrees students.

On Friday, 23 July 2021, the session was continued with another three-hour lecture and a one-hour tutorial conducted by Dr. Nuridayu Alimon, a PhD student of Prof. Dr. Nor Haniza who just graduated from UTM.

Despite the unfortunate circumstances that led to a virtual IndoMS School 2021, the program was well-received by participants and had provided critical exposure to students with regard to international collaborations and visiting professors. Through Prof. Dr. Nor Haniza Sarmin’s lectures, students were given a glimpse of more advanced studies in mathematics beyond their syllabus.

As international members of Asia Technological University Network (ATU-Net), Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR) and Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB), hold responsibility in supporting the network of university members in achieving world-class quality education by organizing beneficial programs for students. IndoMS School 2021 was expected to create positive relationships between UTM and these universities.
