Johor Bahru – A spin-off company under Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) Innovation and Commercialisation Centre (ICC), Biopro Cosmeceutical Sdn Bhd initiated a Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) project by providing UTM community with hand sanitisers during Movement Control Order (MCO).
This project was led by the project directors, Dr. Mariani Abdul Hamid and Dr. Wan Rosli Wan Sulaiman from the School of Chemical & Energy Engineering, UTM.
The background of this initiative was based on Assoc. Prof. Dr. Liza Md. Salleh, the principal of Kolej Datin Seri Endon from Department of Student Affairs intention to provides hand sanitisers for students, staff, and volunteers in UTM college especially during food distributions.
The company which focuses on cosmetics and skincare has generated approximately RM 1 million income every year through its quality products such as serums, lipsticks, moisturisers, and more.
This time the company volunteered to produce a gel form of hand sanitiser with reliable ingredients such as 75% alcohol (ethanol), aloe vera extract, glycerin, hydroxypropyl methylcellulose, nanosilver, and fragrance that are effective to prevent the spread of COVID-19.
The important raw material in the sanitisers which is ethanol was a contribution from University Laboratory Management Centre under Department of Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research & Innovation).
Besides being manufactured by a GMP (Good Manufacturing Practice) factory in UTM-MTDC Technology Centre, the hand sanitisers have also been registered and approved by the Ministry of Health (MOH) Malaysia which means it is safe to be used by all.
To date, the project has managed to produce 100 bottles of 500ml hand sanitisers from its first production which were distributed to the students in the campus through the Department of Student Affairs. The project also has contributed 100 bottles of hand sanitisers to other UTM staff and UTM Security.
With a better production speed through its homogenizer of 200L capacity, the project will continue to distribute more hand sanitisers in the future.
