Technical Seminar on Theory Vs. Practice: Challenges Facing Industrial Applications of Robust Design for Measurements

Monday, 9 April 2018, 6.00pm

Northeastern University

360 Huntington Ave, Boston, Massachusetts 02115, USA

On 9 April 2018, Dr. Rozzeta Dolah was invited to deliver a technical seminar for graduates at Northeastern University, Boston. Having the experience working with Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) and industry prior to academic field, Dr. Rozzeta presented this seminar entitled ‘Theory Vs. Practice: Challenges Facing Industrial Applications of Robust Design for Measurements’ to visualize the difference and its challenges between academia learning in measurements towards the real practice in industry. She represented MIT for the graduates seminar at Northeastern University. She took this opportunity to introduce UTM as Malaysia’s premier institution in engineering, science and technology, together with NanoMITe and Taguchi Centre of UTM Razak School.

This short course is essentially made to understand on how measurements differ between theories learned in academic with actual practice in industry. A problem with measurements is that they are not always representing their corresponding measurand in a perfect way when it is being applied. In many literatures, measurement system only been reviewed the way the test method is carried out without explaining the previous stage before the experimental procedure is done. The gap between theory and practical of measurements that connects the test method used for measurement system is the main issue discussed in the talk. A robust measurement system has enabled the field of robust quality engineering to become more convergent and practical. With measurements’ robustness, higher degree of confidence level is gained besides enlightening the “Black Box” of parameter design behind optimization result.

From participants’ responses, they concluded that this is a very good seminar for researchers, engineers, and industrialists. UTM has contributed to Northeastern University’s continued excellence and leadership in R&D by sharing this talk and introduced important techniques to leverage measurement’s theory into practice to its staff and students.

Profile: Dr. Rozzeta Dolah CEng MIET

Post Doctoral Fellow, MIT Dept. of Mechanical Engineering

Dr. Rozzeta Dolah CEng MIET, trained in Japan and is a Chartered Engineer registered in UK, is a senior lecturer at Universiti Teknologi Malaysia, in Razak School of UTM in Engineering and Advanced Technology, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. She is currently a post doctoral fellow at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Cambridge, USA with expertise in robust quality engineering for nanotechnology in renewable energy. Her area of interests are in microfluidic and nanofluidic transportation system for energy conversion from biomass into aviation fuel, with particular emphasis on the technical experimental design and optimization. She also works in several labs and have lead the design and optimization of a pyrolysis biomass reactor for second generation pyrolysis for bio fuel conversion from palm oil empty fruit bunch. In addition to her expertise, she involved in an optimization of adhesive peel strength for flexible packaging film. One of the industrial collaborations that she involved in are the reduction of CO2 emission in carbon capture utilization and storage (CCUS) research at TNB Malaysia’s power plant using nano catalyst in marine micro algae photo bioreactor. Another collaboration is Malaysia’s automobile PROTON, dealing with robust quality engineering optimization for vehicle dynamic responses in various ride and handling (R&H) performance. As a post doctoral at Microfluidics and Nanofluidics Research Laboratory, under Department of Mechanical Engineering at MIT, and having the experience in robust measurement and metrology for Ph.D at Meiji University, Tokyo, Japan; the research has enabled her to develop skills in robust engineering method for nanotechnology. She teaches quality engineering and her experiences in quality engineering was gained under the direct tutelage of the son of the late Dr. Taguchi, world’s renowned Quality Guru. Prior to being in academic field, she has many years of experience as process engineer in a Japanese organization industry where she was involved in Black Belt Six Sigma projects, and solved quality problems towards zero defects using MINITAB. Dr. Rozzeta is a Minitab trainer, uses it as a powerful statistical software for process optimization, quality improvement in science and engineering field. As a member of Japan’s Quality Engineering Society, she led many quality improvement projects through the implementation of Taguchi Method (Robust Quality Engineering), Design of Experiments (DOE), and Lean/Black Belt Six Sigma.
