Engagement between UTM Top Management and UTM Emeritus Professors Fruitful

Johor Bahru, 6 August 2015 – The Emeritus Professor title award is one of the most prestigious academic awards conferred by Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) to selected professors in recognition of their outstanding service to UTM. The appointment provides the Emeritus Professors with a formal avenue to continue an association with UTM in research, teaching and community service.

Mindful of the significant role Emeritus Professors play in enriching the knowledge culture in the University, UTM top management took the initiative to engage with UTM Emeritus Professors on Thursday, 6th August 2015.

The meeting of minds between the two parties led to the exchange and advancement of innovative ideas of how to further position UTM as a world class university.

To be more financially able, UTM needs to garner more support from the industry. The support can take the form of research grants, scholarships or even internship and industrial attachment opportunities. The Industry can also become partners in the transformation and revival of the Technovation Park.

UTM should also look into the feasibility of offering career management courses, which synthesize academic and professional goals, and prepare students for future internship and job opportunities. Such courses could give UTM students a competitive edge when they enter the job market.

In line with the New Academia concept, UTM should also seriously look into ways of bringing actual practice into the classroom. This could be achieved by expediting activities under the UTM CEO Faculty Programme, which involves CEOs of selected companies coming into the classroom and sharing their expertise and experience.

Another interesting proposal which should be given serious consideration is the concept of bringing practice into the University and vice versa. This concept involves having a specific space in UTM acting as the hub for practicing firms and organization to set up branch offices. Currently, an architecture firm, named ABC Architecture has already set up an office at the Technovation Park. UTM should thus aim for more firms and organizations to locate on campus, which would ultimately benefit UTM students in a number of ways, such as creating on campus employment, facilitating internship and employment opportunities, and promoting the transfer of technology and knowledge.

It is hoped that there will be more fruitful engagements with the Emeritus Professors.
