Kuala Lumpur 15 June: Ibnu Sina Institute for Fundamental Science Studies (IIS), Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) has been recognized as a NanoMalaysia Center of Excellence.

The Award was presented at the opening ceremony of the NanoMalaysia Summit & Expo 2011 by the Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation Malaysia.Datuk Seri Dr Maximus Johnity Ongkili.

The NanoMalaysia Summit and Expo was held on 14-16 June 2011 at the Putra World Trade Center (PWTC) Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia and organized by MOSTI in collaboration with Malaysia Nanotechnology Association (MNA).

IIS, the first institute of its kind in the country was established in 1997. With its tagline “Frontier Science for Life”, IIS emphasizes on frontier science research activities, directly applying basic knowledge of physics, chemistry and biology with mathematics to facilitate the advancement of local technology, engineering and material discoveries in pursuit of fundamental scientific advances through interdisciplinary programmes and collaborations.

As a fundamental science research center, IIS encourages and embraces cooperative, collaborative and interdisciplinary research among scientists and technologists alike.

The other four NanoMalaysia Centers of Excellence are in Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, Universiti Malaysia Perlis, Universiti Teknologi Petronas,  and MIMOS.

Under the NanoMalaysia Programme, the CEOs together with industrial support and international alliances will be engaged in focused research activities coordinated by NanoMalaysia Center located in the Iskandar Malaysia.
