GEZIRA, Sudan, 7 August : Members of Student Representative Council, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (MPMUTM) today, had donated more than SDG 30,000 to the management of Wed Medani Education Hospital and the patients.

The donation was made as part of their humanitarian aid mission in Sudan, aiming  to help out the hospital management to buy the medication needs and simultaneously ease the burden of the poor patients.

The Program Director, Nadhirah A Khalim, said the pediatric hospital was chosen to help them treat the increasing number of  poor patients.

“The hospital has  250 patients who has been treated for diabetes, malaria and malnutrition where  almost two to three patients succumbed to death per week”.

“We were quite shock to learn that the hospital has 640 registered diabetes children patients who came to get their treatment and their parents could not even afford to buy the insulin worth SDG 100 each,” she said.

Nadhirah added, the fund to carry out humanitarian aid mission was sponsored by Bank Rakyat and collected from the public donation for the past four months especially during last Ramadhan.

She said, they also contributed SDG200 cash each to 14 poor patients identified by the hospital’s management .

Meanwhile, the hospital director, Prof. Dr. Huda Mohamad, thanked the delegation for this benevolent contribution which will definitely partially relieved the difficulties of the poor patients here.

She further highlighted on the need to have at least three units of dialysis machine placed here as they do not even own one currently.

A Medical student of Gezira University, Amru, said the increasing number of diabetes patients among children is contributed by  their inherited unhealthy eating habits.

The members of Gezira University Medical Student Association had, however, conducted several public awareness campaigns to resolve this problem.
