From 27th July to 2nd August 2024, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) successfully hosted the AI & Culture Fusion Summer School, welcoming 25 students and lecturers from Universitas Syiah Kuala (USK), Indonesia. The program aimed to explore how artificial intelligence (AI) can support cultural preservation, while fostering closer academic ties between Malaysia and Indonesia. Participants were warmly greeted upon arrival at Senai International Airport, Johor Bahru, where they received program materials and an orientation. They stayed at the Goodhope Hotel, Johor Bahru, where all logistics were handled to ensure a smooth and comfortable experience. The opening ceremony, officiated by Prof. Madya Dr. Mohd Ariffin Abu Hassan, Director of UTM International, emphasized the importance of using AI to promote cultural preservation and innovation. The program was designed to give participants hands-on learning experiences while strengthening cross-border academic relationships. The program offered many valuable learning opportunities, starting with the 3D printing workshops. Participants learned to integrate cultural elements into AI-driven technology by creating their own culturally inspired 3D-printed sculptures. These workshops not only taught practical skills but also encouraged creativity and innovation. A key highlight of the program was the community service session at Kampung Sungai Melayu, where participants engaged in environmental and cultural conservation activities. Students participated in Mangrove Preservation efforts and observed traditional Clam Harvesting techniques used by the local community. This hands-on experience gave students a deeper understanding of how traditional practices contribute to environmental sustainability. Through this session, students gained valuable insights into the importance of community-driven conservation and the strong link between culture, livelihood, and nature.

The practical experience at Kampung Sungai Melayu helped students appreciate the vital role of community service and how it contributes to sustainable development. It also taught them the significance of preserving natural resources and cultural practices, providing them with a more holistic view of environmental and cultural preservation. Beyond the community service, the program offered various cultural excursions to places like Johor Heritage Foundation and Bazaar Karat, where participants immersed themselves in Johor’s rich heritage. They also engaged in traditional Malaysian games like Congkak and Batu Seremban, which added a fun and interactive way to learn about local customs. The program concluded with final presentations of the participants’ 3D printing projects, where they showcased their ability to merge AI with cultural preservation.
