Undergraduates from the Faculty of Computing were announced as winners of several awards at the FUSION 2024 Student Design Competition, held in conjunction with the 6th National Symposium on Human-Computer Interaction (FUSION 2024). This annual competition showcases students’ problem-solving and design skills as they propose innovative solutions to real-world issues affecting both the nation and the global community.
The event, organized by the Kuala Lumpur ACM SIGCHI Chapter (myHCI-UX) and supported by the Association for Computing Machinery – Special Interest Group on Computer-Human Interaction (ACM SIGCHI), took place on 28th September 2024 at Asia Pacific University of Technology & Innovation (APU), Bukit Jalil. For the initial round, students submitted short papers and posters presenting their design solutions, ranging from medium to high-fidelity prototypes. On the day of the competition, each student had 15 minutes to present their projects to a panel of judges comprising leading figures from national institutions and industries.
Muhammad Faiq Haidar, under the guidance of Assoc. Prof. Dr. Siti Zaiton Mohd Hashim and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Masitah Ghazali, secured the Gold Award for his project titled “Radeena: An Innovative Approach to Learning and Resolving Faraid through a Mobile Application.”
Meanwhile, two students under the guidance of Dr. Layla Rasheed won Bronze Awards. Hema Darshiny a/p Bharanee Rao was awarded for her project titled “WeCareU Application,” and Chong Siew Zhen was recognized for her project titled “Foodful: A User-Centered Mobile Platform for Reducing Food Waste and Promoting Affordable Meals in Malaysia.” Additionally, Loai Mohammed Mohammed Al-Sabahi, a student from Malaysia-Japan International Institute of Technology (MJIIT), also won a Bronze award for his project “Groceryeye: Smart Shopping with Object Detection,” under the guidance of Assoc. Prof. Dr. Masitah Ghazali.
FUSION 2024, endorsed as an ACM Chapter conference, is recognized by the world’s leading organization for human-technology and human-computer interaction professionals. This international endorsement elevated the competition’s profile, attracting entries from both local and global institutions.
