One of the highlights of the trip was a hands-on workshop on molecular diabetic testing. Led by Dr Hendra from UM, the UTM students gained hands-on experience in this cutting-edge field and applied their theoretical knowledge to real-world applications. The programme also included a forum that encouraged reflection on the role of Indonesian biodiversity in the treatment of metabolic disorders. UTM and UM students engaged in lively discussions on the potential of Indonesian flora and fauna in addressing global health challenges. In addition to the academic activities, the EXIST programme allowed participants to explore Indonesia’s breathtaking beauty. They embarked on an edu-tourism adventure to Mount Bromo, where they conducted biodiversity assessments and marvelled at the stunning natural landscapes. As part of their community engagement, the students participated in a Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative to raise awareness of the importance of protecting Mount Bromo as a national natural gem. They learnt about the environmental and social impacts of tourism and advocated for sustainable practices.

In addition to the academic and cultural activities, the programme aimed to foster important qualities such as communication, adaptability and tolerance among the students. By experiencing different cultures and perspectives, participants developed a broader worldview and a deeper appreciation for diversity. The EXIST programme was a resounding success and provided UTM students with a valuable opportunity to learn, grow and create lasting memories. When they return to Malaysia, they will undoubtedly be better equipped to navigate the complexities of today’s interconnected world.
