The 6th ICBME 2024: Pioneering Sustainable Technologies in Biosciences and Biomedical Research

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 30 – The 6th International Conference on Biosciences and Medical Engineering (ICBME) 2024, held on 28-29 August at the Concorde Hotel, Kuala Lumpur, brought together the brightest minds and emerging leaders in biosciences and medical engineering. Organized by the Centre of Sustainable Nanomaterials (CSNano) and the Department of Biosciences, Faculty of Science, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM), the event was a dynamic platform for breakthrough innovations and thought-provoking exchanges. This year’s theme, “Emerging Sustainable Technologies in Biosciences & Biomedical Research,” captured the cutting-edge focus of the event, which was supported by the Ministry of Science, Technology, and Innovation (MOSTI).

In a significant highlight, ICBME 2024 was held in tandem with the 5th Bionanotechnology Research Seminar (BioNanoSem), reflecting a growing emphasis on cross-disciplinary collaboration. Supported by the National Nanotechnology Center (NNC) and the Malaysia Research Accelerator for Technology & Innovation (MRANTI), the conference was officially opened by Dato’ Ts. Dr. Hj. Aminuddin Bin Hassim, Secretary General of MOSTI. One of the standout moments was the formal signing of Memorandums of Understanding (MoU) between UTM, Universitas Brawijaya (UB) Indonesia, and Asia Metropolitan University (AMU), reinforcing the strong international bonds that underpin scientific progress. The industry-academia partnership was further underscored by the product launch of Phyto Biznet Sdn. Bhd., demonstrating real-world applications of innovative research.

The conference gathered thought leaders and experts from 11 countries, including Indonesia, Nigeria, Korea, Türkiye, and Japan, making it a truly global stage for sharing cutting-edge research. With 55 oral presentations and 36 poster sessions, ICBME 2024 explored the future of biosciences, chemistry, physics, and biomedical engineering, with nanotechnology and nano-cosmeceuticals emerging as key themes with promising industrial applications.

Preceding the main event, the Pre-Conference Workshop on Nanocosmeceuticals, co-organized by the Institute of Bioproduct Development (IBD) and CSNano, UTM, attracted 55 participants from academia, industry, and government agencies. The workshop, led by seven top-tier experts, offered valuable insights into how nanotechnology is reshaping the cosmetics industry, providing a glimpse into the future of personal care products.

Additionally, the Industrial Showcase, organized by UTM’s Centre of Community and Industrial Network (CCIN) and supported through the AIMS4STAR fund, facilitated vital exchanges between academia and industry, opening doors for future research collaborations and commercialization opportunities.

Assoc. Prof. Ir. Ts. Dr. Rosnani binti Hasham @ Hisam, chair of the organizing committee, expressed heartfelt thanks to all participants, partners, and sponsors whose support helped make ICBME 2024 a resounding success. “The event has truly set the stage for future innovations, and the partnerships and ideas fostered here will undoubtedly shape the future of biosciences and medical engineering,” she remarked.

ICBME 2024 stands as a testament to the power of collaboration, innovation, and sustainability, driving forward the global conversation on how science can address pressing challenges and improve lives worldwide.
