WEST JAVA, INDONESIA – The University of Indonesia or Universitas Indonesia (UI) has appointed Prof. Dr. Arshad Ahmad from Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) as the Visiting Professor and invited him to share his thoughts for a Professor Talk session with the academicians and students from the Faculty of Engineering, UI via a Zoom Meetings platform, recently.

This session was also attended by Prof. Ir. Dr. Renanto Handogo, a renowned professor of process control from Sepuluh Nopember Institute of Technology (ITS) of Indonesia.

Prof. Arshad delivered his talk to 150 participants from the chemical engineering department and shared his expertise in process control and automation in chemical engineering throughout his vast knowledge and experience for over 35 years.

He gave inputs on how to attract the undergraduates’ interest as well as the implementation of process control in the real chemical engineering world by outlined four keywords for future technology such as big data, wireless, autonomous and simultaneous.

These areas are currently covered in UTM Research and Innovation Blueprint 2025 which becomes the pillars to achieve UTM enVision 2025, a strategic framework, through core values of Integrity, Synergy, Excellence and Sustainability (ISES).

Energy security, water security, smart mobility, next-generation system & networks, and smart manufacturing & material are among UTM Research Signature Areas that spelt out in the UTM Research and Innovation Blueprint 2025.

Prof. Arshad joined UTM since the year 1986 and currently the Director of Institute of Future Energy (IFE), UTM, an outfit that strives towards establishing energy sustainability for the present and future.

Over the years, he has held several key positions in the University including the Head of Chemical Engineering Department, Deputy Dean of Faculty of Chemical and Natural Resources Engineering, Head of Chemical & Biotechnology Focus Group, Director of Institute of Hydrogen Economy, and Associate Director of Strategy Management Office.

To support the process industry, he actively provides training and consultancy services in the areas of process safety, risk assessment and process control.

His research activities cover process modeling, process safety, process intensification and hydrogen energy, with funding received from government and industry.

With more than 30 years of experience, he has delivered various courses and provided supervision to both undergraduate and postgraduate students in UTM.

To promote the hydrogen economy, he also currently serves as the Vice-President of the Malaysian Association of Hydrogen Energy. Prof. Arshad holds a B.Sc. in Chemical Engineering from Colorado State University (USA), M.Sc. from Swansea University (UK), and Ph.D. from the University of Newcastle upon Tyne (UK).
