An International Open Design Crit Between SRM Institute Science and Technology, Chennai, and Architecture Program FABU, UTM

The Architecture Program, Faculty of Built Environment and Surveying (FABU), Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM), had conducted an International Open Design Crit Between SRM Institute Science and Technology, Chennai, India and the UTM Architecture Program on 4th February 2021 using the online platform. This event was officiated by the Director of Architecture Program, AP Dr Alice Sabrina Ismail and the opening speech was delivered by the Head Department of Architecture Professor C. Pradeepa from SRMIST School of Architecture and Interior Design. Invited delegates from Silpakorn University, Thailand also attended this event and was represented by Assoc. Prof Dr. Kreangkrai Kirdsiri. This 5-hour online session was attended by 170 participants comprising academicians and architecture students from three countries; Thailand, India and Malaysia. This historic event was also opened for public viewing on the FB platform.

Eight lecturers represented SRIMST Architecture School as panel crits with nine Bachelor of Architecture students, whilst UTM was represented by eight lecturers from different niche areas along with seven Bachelor of Architecture Science (Part 1) and two Masters of Architecture (Part 2) students. The UTM Architecture lecturers as design crit panels comprised Dr. Aiman Mohd Rashid, Dr. Fadhlina Ahmad@ Taufik, Ar Chan Wai Lai, Dr. Iziq Eafifi Ismail, Ar Norshahida Azili, Dr. Roshida Abdul Majid, AP Dr. Khairul Anwar Mohd Khaidzir and Mr. Azari Mat Yasir. The SRMIST Architecture School lecturers were represented by Prof. Pradeepa C, Prof. Esther Cherine, Prof. Anoop, Prof. Saravana Raja, Dr. Satheesh Kumar, Dr. Shanthi Priya, Prof. Geetha. K and Prof. Prashanthini. This online design crit session was beneficial for academicians and students as it provided distance and online studio education with a structured means for improving and intensifying the learning process.  This online international design colloquium in the form of group-form critiques is seen as very effective at engaging students and lecturers in a  more productive educational environment. This event was valuable in building linkages and strengthen the relationship between international architecture schools so that many activities involving research, publication, and intellectual discourse for students and academicians can be conducted in the future.
