Pervasive Computing Research Group (PCRG), Lightwave Communication Research Group (LCRG), and Computer Network Systems Research Group (CNetS) from Faculty of Engineering, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) had successfully organised a one-day Seminar entitled The Emerging Networking Technology: Software Defined Network on 25th February 2020.

The seminar was also co-organised by the largest IEEE Chapter in Malaysia, IEEE Communication Society/Vehicular Technology Society Joint Chapter. Around 60 participants gathered to embrace the new technology; where most of the participants were from UTM, while the rest of them were from Universiti Teknologi Tun Hussein Onn, Universiti Tenaga Nasional, Universiti Teknologi Mara, and Universiti Teknikal Melaka.

Three speakers shared their experiences and knowledge in Software Defined Network. One of the speakers was Dr. Ahmad Tajuddin from Telekom Malaysia Berhad who had shared his foresight on Software Defined Network in the Future. He cleared up the misunderstanding about Software-Defined Networking (SDN) and Network Functions Virtualization (NFV).

He gave some samples of use cases on Broadband Access Network and also advertised vacancy at Open Network Foundation. He also stated that ONOS is the only SDN controller platform that supports the transition from legacy networks to SDN networks. He encouraged university researchers to contribute to ONOS networking core which falls in between Northbound API and Southbound API in ONOS system tiers.

Another speaker in the seminar was Dr. Saravanan from TM One, who shared about Strategic Approach in Driving Operations of Software Defined Wide Area Network (SD WAN). He opened participants’ minds on the services that can be offered by SD WAN. For example, SD WAN can provide central control and visibility, reduce network complexity, assure performance, and improve speed and flexibility among others.

Meanwhile, Associate Prof. Dr. Mohd. Murtadha gave a sharing based on researcher findings on potential challenges in obtaining adaptive and scalable Open-Flow SDN open flow. The research focused on scalability issues in both data plane and control plane of SDN.

PCRG, LCRG, and CNetS would like to express their gratitude to the Faculty of Engineering Research and Innovation Committee for their support on realizing the seminar. Congratulations to the speakers, organizers, co-organizer, tutors, and all participants for their great effort in this valuable knowledge sharing session!
