JOHOR BAHRU, Feb 15 – The Research Group of Advanced Technical and Vocational Education and Training at the Faculty of Educational Sciences and Technology (FEST), Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM), has partnered with Gabungan Anak-anak Palsi Serebrum Malaysia (GAPS) to launch the GAPS Connect: Roadshow 2025. Supporting partners for this initiative include Great Life Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation, Perpustakaan Sultan Ismail Johor Bahru, Johor Bahru City Council (MBJB), and Yayasan Johor Corporation (YJC). The primary objective of this program is to raise awareness about cerebral palsy and promote social inclusion for the cerebral palsy community in Malaysia.
The GAPS Connect: Roadshow 2025 program focuses on key areas to empower individuals with cerebral palsy. It emphasizes the development of life skills, highlighting essential abilities such as self-care, food preparation, and personal hygiene, which are crucial for fostering independence among these individuals. Additionally, the program prioritizes skill training, recognizing entrepreneurial activities and vocational training tailored to their needs as vital components in helping individuals achieve economic independence and social integration.
Additionally, the program encompasses educational initiatives such as GAPS’ GREAT program, which provides academic, therapy, and life skills support for children and adults with cerebral palsy. Early intervention through home education is also emphasized, as it can significantly boost cognitive development. Furthermore, the event highlights innovative therapies that assist with daily activities while reducing dependence on physical help from therapists, promoting neuroplasticity and encouraging greater independence for individuals with cerebral palsy. This program has actively involved families affected by cerebral palsy across Johor and has received support from various NGOs such as Persatuan Rakan Celik PIPI (Physical, Intervention, Psychological & Intellectual) in Johor Bahru, which is dedicated to enhancing the rights and well-being of individuals with cerebral palsy. The partnership between UTM and GAPS showcases a strong commitment to supporting social inclusion and creating a more equitable society. With initiatives like these, there is significant hope that more individuals will engage in supporting the cerebral palsy community both locally and internationally. UTM, as a leading research university, is dedicated to addressing the needs of diverse individuals and learners through practical, skills-based education, highlighting the essential role that technology-focused universities play in promoting social inclusion and enhancing quality of life. With continued efforts and collective advocacy, the aspiration for a more inclusive society for individuals with cerebral palsy is becoming a reality—empowering them to lead more meaningful and independent lives.
