UTMCS and Tigasfera Collaborate Towards a Cleaner City, Advancing SDGs

KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 13 – UTM Campus Sustainability (UTMCS), representing Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM), has formalized a groundbreaking collaboration with Tigasfera Greentech Sdn. Bhd., led by its Founder and Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Yusof Faizal Amin, and Hj. Toslan Ali and Mohamed Irfan. This partnership aims to advance sustainable urban development through innovative waste-to-energy solutions, addressing environmental challenges while aligning with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), specifically Goals 7, 11, 12, and 17.

The collaboration was solidified during a meeting at UTM, focusing on the transformative “Reimagining Waste to Energy” project. This initiative aims to tackle critical issues such as landfill overflows and greenhouse gas emissions in urban regions, specifically targeting Setiawangsa, Setapak, and Keramat.

At the heart of this initiative is Tigasfera’s cutting-edge EcoSfera 1.0 system. This containerized waste conversion solution employs advanced pyrolysis and gasification technology to treat waste directly at its source. This system converts organic and inorganic materials into renewable energy, biocarbon, and biochar, promoting a circular economy while contributing to key SDGs.

SDG 7 (Affordable and Clean Energy): The EcoSfera 1.0 system generates renewable energy through electricity and heat, reducing reliance on fossil fuels and promoting sustainable energy access.

SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities): By addressing urban waste management challenges, the project supports the creation of resilient, environmentally friendly cities, ultimately reducing landfill dependence and enhancing livability.

SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production): The waste-to-value approach encourages efficient resource use, minimizes waste, and fosters sustainable production systems.

SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals): The collaboration between UTMCS and Tigasfera exemplifies how academia and industry can unite to deliver impactful solutions, leveraging shared expertise and resources to drive sustainability.

During the meeting, Yusof Faizal Amin stated, “This collaboration is not just about waste management; it’s about reimagining sustainability. By partnering with UTMCS, we demonstrate how collaborations can amplify the impact of innovative technologies in achieving global goals.”

The initiative is inspired by Tigasfera’s proven success at its i-CARE Hub in Cyberjaya, where eight tonnes of waste are processed annually, resulting in the production of one tonne of biochar and renewable energy. The scalability of this model offers immense potential for urban centers across Malaysia. The targeted areas of Setiawangsa, Setapak, and Keramat will serve as pilot sites for this collaboration, addressing urgent waste management needs while laying the foundation for future expansion.

UTMCS reaffirms its commitment to engaging students and researchers in this project, providing hands-on learning opportunities in green technology and fostering innovation in sustainable practices. This academic-industry partnership exemplifies how collective efforts can advance the global sustainability agenda while delivering tangible local benefits.

Through this collaboration, UTMCS and Tigasfera are not only redefining waste management but also driving meaningful progress towards a cleaner, greener, and more sustainable Malaysia, in line with the nation’s commitments to the United Nations SDGs.
