UTM Faculty of Computing Hosts FCRI x MGI 2024: Bridging Academia and Industry through AI Innovation

JOHOR BAHRU, 27 June – The Faculty of Computing successfully hosted the Faculty of Computing Research and Innovation (FCRI) Day x Meet & Greet with Industries (MGI) 2024, an event aimed at fostering collaboration, enhancing research, and promoting innovation within the faculty and industry.

The launching ceremony of FCRI x MGI 2024 was officiated by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research and Innovation), Prof. Rosli bin Md Illias, at Block N28a, Faculty of Computing, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) Johor Bahru. The event saw the participation of esteemed guests, including Prof. Ts. Dr. Wan Mohd Nasir Wan Kadir, Dean of the Faculty of Computing, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Siti Zaiton binti Mohd Hashim, Deputy Dean (Research, Innovation & Development) as Program Advisor, and Dr. Sabrinah Adam, Deputy Director of the Centre for Community and Industry Network (CCIN), alongside various industry partners.

Dr. Ahmad Najmi bin Amerhaider Nuar, the Program Director of FCRI x MGI 2024, emphasized the event’s significance in bridging the gap between academia and industry. “This event is crucial for encouraging research and innovation while fostering collaboration with industries. Our theme, ‘AI Transforming Tomorrow,’ highlights the transformative potential of artificial intelligence in shaping the future of technology and industry,” he stated.

The event featured a series of engaging programs designed to highlight the latest advancements in artificial intelligence (AI) and foster industry-academic collaboration. Esteemed academicians and industry experts delivered insightful presentations on AI and Quantum Computing, exploring cutting-edge research and its practical applications. The Meet & Greet with Industries networking session allowed industry leaders, faculty members, and students to discuss potential collaborations, explore internship opportunities, and share insights on AI advancements.

Undergraduate students showcased their skills in the AI Hackathon by tackling real-world problems using AI, demonstrating innovative solutions and technologies that push the boundaries of the field. In the Research Pitching Sessions, researchers and postgraduates presented their groundbreaking projects, providing a platform for interdisciplinary interaction and knowledge exchange. The event also facilitated connections between students and industry professionals, promoting exciting internship placements and fostering future talent. Leading companies in the AI field displayed their latest innovations and projects in the Industries Showcase, offering attendees a glimpse into the future of technology.

Dr. Ahmad Najmi added, “FCRI x MGI 2024 embodies our collective pursuit of knowledge and innovation. By bringing together academia and industry, we aim to create a platform for knowledge exchange and partnership, igniting curiosity and unity around pioneering ideas.”

The event also received generous support from sponsors Huawei, UNIFI, and Certiify. Dr. Sabrinah Adam from CCIN was recognized for her significant contributions in fostering collaboration between the university and industry partners. She supported this program through the AIM4Star initiative, providing RM5,000 as seed money to initiate the event. The initiative focused on the Meet & Greet program with industries, further emphasizing the importance of industry engagement.

Prof. Ts. Dr. Wan Mohd Nasir Wan Kadir, Dean of the Faculty of Computing, praised the event’s role in promoting innovation and collaboration. “Events like FCRI x MGI 2024 are essential in showcasing our faculty’s research excellence and fostering a spirit of creativity and collaboration,” he noted.

In addition to the main programs, the event provided comprehensive support and amenities for participants, including designated parking areas, booth setups, and accommodation options at the UTM Scholar Inn Hotel.

Overall, FCRI x MGI 2024 was a resounding success, offering a dynamic platform for showcasing innovation, promoting collaboration, and inspiring future exploration in the field of computing.
