JOHOR BAHRU, Dec. 20 – A webinar titled ‘Exploring Biomaterials and Nanomaterials in Medical Applications: Innovations and Insights, Series III’ was successfully conducted on December 19th, 2023, through the Webex platform, with a live stream on the Faculty of Science’s Facebook page.

The Faculty of Science recently held a webinar attended by 35 people, including 15 students and 20 staff members from Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM). The event was led by Dr. Nurhafizah binti Hasim and Dr. Nur Hidayah binti Ahmad, with support from the Advanced Optical Materials Research Group (AOMRG), the Faculty of Science UTM, MASS Chapter UTM, and Frontier Material Research Alliance (FMRA) UTM.

During the webinar, Dr. Aaliyawani Ezzerin binti Sinin from Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) presented a talk titled ‘Multiferroics in the Medical Field’. The webinar discussed the potential applications of multiferroic materials in the medical field, highlighting their dual ferroic orders – ferroelectric and magnetic properties. This property allows the material to couple electric and magnetic fields, allowing advanced devices with enhanced functionality. The talk focused on using multiferroics in advanced medical imaging technologies. These drug delivery systems respond to magnetic fields, highly sensitive biomedical sensors, and therapeutic devices for cancer treatment, such as localized magnetic hyperthermia. Though these applications hold much promise, challenges such as material optimization, biocompatibility, and scalability must be addressed. The webinar emphasized the pioneering integration of multiferroic materials into medical applications and envisioned a future where collaboration between materials science and medicine delivers effective and targeted solutions to healthcare challenges.

The webinar offered valuable insights on using biomaterials and nanomaterials in medical applications, focusing on multiferroics in the medical field. This is expected to have a positive impact on society and the world at large. In conclusion, the participants have gained a fresh perspective on this important issue.
