Lightwave Communication Research Group (LCRG) in collaboration with Pervasive Computing Research Group (PCRG) from Faculty of Engineering; Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) had successfully held a one-day workshop on 10th March 2020.
This workshop was also co-organized by IEEE Communication Society/Vehicular Technology Society Joint Chapter from the Malaysia Section. The participants were Diploma students majoring in communication field from Politeknik Ibrahim Sultan, Pasir Gudang, Johor.
The participants were trained in four different modules. The first module was a training on Wavelength Division Multiplexing (WDM) spectrum and crosstalk measurement. The characteristics of WDM spectrum can be seen from optical spectrum analyzer for examples; optical signal to noise ratio (OSNR), channel spacing, centre wavelength, and full width half maximum (FWHM).
The second module was on Optical Time Domain Reflectometer (OTDR). An OTDR may be used for estimating the fibre’s length and overall attenuation, including splice and connector losses. The third module was on Optical Fibre Access Network where they learned about the components used in fibre optic access network and calculating link loss in the network.
Lastly, Monitoring Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing Network (DWDM) nodes was the final module where they learned about configuring and monitoring the nodes using Pandora FMS.
The collaboration between Faculty of Engineering (UTM), Politeknik Ibrahim Sultan, and IEEE ComSoc/VTS Malaysia Chapter will continue further where such workshop and training are well planned for future activities.
