UTM Faculty of Science’s Senior Lecturer invited as Visiting Academic Scholar at Biocon Academy, India

Dr Mohd Helmi Sani, a Senior Lecturer at the Department of Biosciences, Faculty of Science, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia was invited to  Biocon’s  Faculty Development Program (FDP) , Biocon Academy, Biocon Ltd, Bangalore, India as a Visiting Academic Scholar. The faculty Development Program was scheduled for 12 days (1st July 2019 to 12th July 2019).

The program involved academicians with biotechnology background as participants. The course involved a  classroom lecture by the Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) from Biocon India and also industrial assignment and training at Biocon’s state-of-the-art labs. The course was designed to give insights to the academicians on the latest equipments, technologies and processes  currently being deployed in the industries. During the program, Dr Mohd Helmi also learnt current pedagogical skills related to biotechnology scientific principles particularly on the practices in the biopharmaceutical industry.

The curriculum discussed with the Subject Matter Experts (SME) from Biocon India Ltd. included various perspectives such as Biotech and Biopharma market and segments, lifecycle of a drug and development, cell line selection and media optimization, biosimilars and monoclonal antibodies, microbial fermentation and mammalian cell bioreactor, downstream processing and quality unit, qualification and validation, cGMP, quality management system (QMS) and quality by design (QbD), Quality Control and failure investigation, Design of experiment (DoE), process development and regulatory pathway.

It is hoped that this traning will further strengthen the existing network between Biocon Malaysia Sdn. Bhd., (Asia’s largest integrated insulin manufacturing) a subsidiary of  Biocon India Ltd based in Nusajaya, Johor, Malaysia and the Department of Biosciences, Faculty of Science, UTM. Furthermore as the Department of Biosciences Industrial Advisory Panel, it is highly anticipated that Biocon Malaysia will play an important role in Industrial revolution 4.0 (IR 4.0) particularly in ensuring the industrial relevance of bioscience programs and talent development of the Bioscience’s graduates in the Biopharmaceutical Industry.
