PUTRAJAYA, 1 November 2016 – Three professors from Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) have been selected to be recipients for the 2016 Malaysia Rising Star Awards for their achievements in the research and developments (R&D).
They are the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Research and Innovation), Prof. Dr. Ahmad Fauzi Ismail, Director of Process Systems Engineering Centre (UTM-PROSPECT), Faculty of Chemical and Energy Engineering Prof. Ir. Dr. Sharifah Rafidah Datu Wan Alwi and Prof. Dr. Zainal Salam from the Faculty of Electrical Engineering.
Prof. Dr. Ahmad Fauzi and Prof. Dr Zainal received the awards under the category of Frontier Researcher and Prof. Dr Sharifah Rafidah under Young Researcher category.
They were selected for obtaining the top one percent of the Highly Cited Papers published worldwide and the selection was made by Thompson Reuters and Elsevier.
They received the award from the Minister of Higher Education, Dato’ Seri Idris Jusoh during the Malaysia’s Rising Star Award & CREAM 2016 Status Ceremony in Putrajaya, today.
Prof. Dr. Ahmad Fauzi has been awarded more than 120 awards both nationally and internationally. One of the most prestigious awards he has received so far is the Merdeka Award for the Outstanding Scholarly Achievement Category on 4th September 2014.
He was also the recipient of the Innovative Action Plan for Human Capital Development Tertiary Level Award in 2013 by The Ministry of Education.
Prof. Dr. Ahmad Fauzi received the Malaysia Young Scientist Award in 2000, ASEAN Young Scientist Award in 2001, the National Intellectual Property Award twice, in 2009 (Patent Category) and 2013 (Product Category) as well as the National Innovation Award twice, in 2009 (Waste to Wealth Category) and 2011 (Product Category).
He also won National Academic Award (Innovation and Product Commercialization Category) in August 2013 and Malaysian Toray Science and Technology Foundation Award, on 28th November 2013.
Recently, he received Most Cited Researchers Elsevier 2016 for Shanghai Ranking’s Global Ranking of Academic in Chemical Engineering by Shanghai Jiatong Univeity.
Meanwhile, Prof. Dr. Zainal Salam has been with UTM for over 30 years and is currently attached to the Centre of Electrical Energy Systems, Faculty of Electrical Engineering. His current research work relates to renewable energy, power electronics and control. He publishes extensively in high impact journals, particularly the IEEE and Elsevier titles.
In addition, he has been an active reviewer and since 2011, has served as the Editor for the IEEE Transactions on Sustainable Energy. He also regularly conducts workshops on publication in and outside UTM.
Prof Zainal consistently targets his work to be published in journals with a high number of citations. Three of his original research papers in the field of solar photovoltaic accumulated over 500 citations in the last four years.
Prof. Dr. Sharifah Rafidah is company Co-founder, Board of Director and Director of R&D Optimal Systems Engineering Sdn Bhd, a UTM Spin-off company, and previously won the National Young Scientist Award 2015 and ASEAN Young Scientist and Technologist Award (AYSTA 2014).
She has been selected as the runner-up from among more than 60 ASEAN applicants for the 2016 ASEAN-U.S. Science Prize for Women in the 2016 ASEAN Ministerial Meeting held in Siem Reap, Cambodia in October 2016.
