JKMKTC ‘The Little Stars’ programme and exposure on university life

JOHOR BAHRU, 6 October 2016 – The Kolej Tunku Canselor Committee of College Students (JKM) of Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) in collaboration with several governmental bodies namely the Johor State Education Department (JPNJ) and the Institution of Engineers Malaysia (IEM) has organized the ‘The Little Stars’ programme.
‘The Little Stars’ programme is an educational outreach activity for orphans from 11 districts in Johor involving 150 Form Five students and 40 UTM students.
Programme Director, Muhammad Faiq Mohamed Faisal said this programme was intended to provide exposure to college life while gaining more knowledge in the academic field.
“The main goal of this programme was to provide reinforcement to the participants in terms of academia especially for English and Mathematics in particular in preparation for the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) that is ‘just around the corner’.
“The participants also had the opportunity to gain exposure in daily life as a university student,” he said.
Muhammad Faiq said during the programme, activities involved were in academia and motivation. Participants were given extra classes on Mathematics and English as these subjects were crucial to any application to university.
“In addition to academia, participants had the opportunity to gain exposure and motivation where counselors from the UTM Counseling Centre UTM provided psychological help for enhancing self-esteem and confidence as a preparatory step before going to university,” he said.
Participants were also given the chance to show their talents in terms of innovation in the slot “We Are the Inventors” in the Centre of Student Innovation (CSI) to help participants enhance creativity in themselves.
Participants also visited some Responsibility Centres (PTJ) such as the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and the Institute of High Voltage and Current (IVAT) for the realization of their desire to continue their studies at the ivory tower.
The programme was officiated by the Honourable Dr. Haji Zaini Abu Bakar, Member of Johor State Legislative Assembly (Assemblyman) Nusajaya.
