CYBERJAYA, 18 April 2015- Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) sent two teams to participate in Imagine Cup Malaysia 2015 and won 1st Runner-up under the Innovation category.
The competition was organised by Microsoft and supported by organisations such as Multimedia Development Corporation (MDEC), Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), Cyberview, Perodua, Malaysia Global Innovation & Creativity Centre (MAGIC) and Telekom Malaysia (TM Net).
After making past the first round of online selection, UTM was among the five that were shortlisted to enter the National Finals in Innovation category. The UTM team succeeded to grab the second place after three rounds of pitching in the 3-days event.
The UTM team comprises of Mr. Chan Kok Seng, Mr. Chong Eng Hui, and Mr. Lo Kar Yeong, and is supervised by Dr. Lim Cheng Siong with the project title ‘1 Malaysia Smart Energy Saver’. The product combines both smart energy meter and power factor corrector in one to cut down on the power usage at home or at an industrial plant.
The users can then view the past and current electricity usage and electricity bill through a mobile application. The winning team received RM3,000 cash and certificates. The other UTM team comprises of Mr. Yong Bang Xiang, Mr. Jason Lim Ji Chen, Mr, Tan Ru Dei, Mr. Chin Linn Kern and is supervised by Dr. Yeong Che Fai with the project title ‘We Alert’.
The product is a crowd-sourcing mobile application which allows users in neighbourhood to alert other users of dengue cases for better prevention awareness. It incorporates a predictive analysis feature which allows users to monitor areas with risk of dengue outbreaks.
Furthermore, Mr Yong Bang Xiang who is UTM Electrical-Electronic 2nd Year undergraduate student was invited to give a sharing session as a panelist in Imagine Cup Malaysia 2015.
He shared on his experience as a past year Imagine Cup Malaysia First Prize Winner with project title ‘Durian Runtuh: Virtual Rehabilitation System for Stroke Rehabilitation Exercise’ supervised by Dr Yeong Che Fai.
The project enables stroke patients to practice rehabilitation exercises with graphical and audio motivation. The system also provides objective assessment of their recovery performance. He also shared about the project’s close collaboration with National Stroke Association of Malaysia (NASAM) whereby the system is installed and used in NASAM Stroke Center, Petaling Jaya. The project is commercialized by UTM Spin-off company Techcare Innovation Sdn Bhd (www.cr2connect.com).
