On 17th April 2015, 23 students of SBEL1661 Landscape Ecology went on a field trip to Tanjung Balau in order to gain more insights into the ecosystem of coastal forests. At the site, they saw first hand the ‘services’ provided, and resilience of the ecosystem of the coastal forest. Services provided included protection of the coastline by mangrove trees and habitats of birds and mammals offered by coastal vegetation. Some of the dominant trees are Barringtonia, Syzygium, Terminalia, Causuarina, Pandanus, Ficus and Dipterocarp. Discussions on how vegetation strived and flourished in ‘Beris’ sandy landscape was also held. The class instructor was Dr Ismail Said.
