JOHOR BAHRU, 10 March 2015 – A Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) student in Chemical Engineering from Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) has been selected to attend the 65th Lindau Nobel Laurette Meeting to be held in Germany.

Liew Peng Yen, 26, has submitted his thesis titled ‘Total Site Heat Integration Tools for Continuous Variable and Demands System’, and is waiting to be called for his viva voce. His research focus was on Steam Distribution Systems in Industries and how the system contributes towards energy conservation.

The significance and relevance of his research was exemplified when it was shown that his research product could help save the consumption of heat energy by RM10.15 million. This finding was revealed in a research conducted in a Petrochemical factory located in Bintulu, Sarawak.

Following this success, he then developed a software named ‘Optimal Site’ which assists in steam energy conservation in industries and successfully obtained the copyright for his efforts.

The software competed in the Industrial Art and Technology Exhibition (INATEX) 2014, organised by UTM, where it received the Gold Award and Jury Award.

He was supervised by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Sharifah Rafidah Wan Alwi, a senior lecturer in the Department of Chemical Engineering, Faculty of Chemical Engineering UTM.

The 65th Lindau Nobel Laureate Meeting is expected to be attended by 75 Nobel Laureates, who will be meeting the next generation of leading scientists and researchers.  672 excellent students from all over the world comprising PhD candidates and post-docs from all three Nobel Prize natural science disciplines, namely, medicine and physiology, physics and chemistry have been selected to attend the meet.

The Lindau Meeting will feature a multitude of lectures, panel discussions and master classes.
