JOHOR BAHRU, 23 September 2014 – A total of 200 free helmets was distributed to the students of Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) on the Road Safety Awareness Campaign (CBP) launching day organised by the UTM Community Transformation Center (CTC) in collaboration with the Malaysian Road Safety Department (JKJR).
The event held at Dewan Sri Perdana, Kolej Perdana was officially launched by the JKJR Director General, Dato’ Dr. Tam Weng Wah.
Speaking at a press conference after the launching ceremony, Dr. Tam said that UTM is one of the Malaysian Higher Learning Institutions selected to participate in this awareness programme.
“For the record, three more universities have been selected to organize the awareness campaign namely Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) which was held on 29 August, Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM) on 23 September and Universiti Teknologi Petronas (UTP) on 3 October 2014 respectively.
“In addition to the helmets given, students involved also received a pair of reflector jacket for night riding purposes. For the students whose helmets do not meet the standard of SIRIM, replacement of a new helmet was also given, “he said.
This programme was inspired by the government with the objective to share the safety knowledge while ensuring the helmets used met the SIRIM International standards.
Several exhibition booths by relevant agencies such as the Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM), The Land Public Transport Commission (SPAD), Road Transport Department (JPJ) and UTM Security Division were also set up to support this programme.
“This program was the first to be held in UTM and I hope that through this proactive approach, the safe driving methods could be cultivated among university students,” said Dr Tam.
Also attending the ceremony were Director of UTMCTC, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nur Naha Abu Mansor and Managing Director of SIRIM QAS International, Khalidah Mustafa.
