Johor Bahru, 17 November, 2012:  Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) will be collaborating with a renowned university in Germany, Technical University Munich (TUM) to establish TUM – UTM Collaborative Institute (TUMUT), to be launched in July 2013. The institute will embark on research and educationprogrammes, primarily focusing on the fields of geographic information system and water research, expected to start in mid-2014.  The institute is also expected to promote greater interaction between scholars in UTM and TUM through recruitment and training of researchers in relevant fields.

The proposed formation of the institute was a result of a discussion between TUM, which was represented by its Senior Vice President, Prof. Liqui Meng, and Dr Michael Klime and UTM’s management team headed by UTM Vice Chancellor, Prof. Datuk Ir. Dr. Zaini Ujang, during TUM’s visit to UTM today. Later during the day, TUM delegates were brought to visit the Scholar’s Inn and campus site.

TUM, founded in 1968, is one of the leading universities in Europe. It is distinguished in research and teaching, interdisciplinary studies, and fostering of talent. The global trademark of TUM symbolises strong alliances with both corporations and scientific institutions. TUM is listed 47th among universities internationally and first among German universities by the Shanghai Ranking (ARWU 2011).
